Trade for a Pitcher?

It's looking like it will be difficult to sign two top-tier free-agent pitchers this offseason.  Could we trade for one instead?  We're often mentioned in the Jake Peavy talks, but who else may be available?

The Reds are looking for an outfielder and are reportedly in talks for Jermaine Dye.  What would it take to get Edinson Volquez or Aaron Harang?  Xavier Nady and a pitching prospect?

The Giants are looking for all sorts of pieces.  I imagine Tim Lincecum is off-limits, but Matt Cain is possibly on the table.

Edwin Jackson or Andy Sonnanstine may be available to make room for David Price, but would the Rays trade in-division?  Not likely.  They need a DH and a RF, so we could supply Nady or Matsui.

The Angels' rotation is going to be overcrowded if they sign Sabathia, and it's already bordering on packed.  They likely would make Jered Weaver available rather than Kelvim Escobar or Ervin Santana, and we don't want him.  His ERA has increased significantly every year he's been in the majors.

What about the A's and Justin Duchscherer?  Seems Billy Beane's always dumping tons of young talent every offseason, but this year, trading for Matt Holliday and gunning hard for Rafael Furcal, they may be serious about actually contending for a change.

The Rangers are reportedly shopping Vicente Padilla, who started off hot as a pistol this season before really turning into a bum.  This will be a contract year for him, and he's only 31, so getting him for one year and about $11 mil may not be a terrible option, if push comes to shove.

I'd love to have the Marlins' Ricky Nolasco.  They could probably use an outfielder.

Looks like, God knows why, the Astros are buying pitchers, not selling.  Roy Oswalt and, to a far lesser extent, Wandy Rodriguez would be welcome additions to the rotation.

Anyone else I'm missing?

I'm quite certain ...

most of the guys mentioned are available, but for what price? I really don’t want to see us getting nervous, impatient and making a bad decision-jettisoning talent for .500 guys, or guys in decline or flashes-in-the-pan.

I don't think the Blue Jays are in any contention for a pennant

and they have a real good pitcher called Roy Halladay in the lineup. Now the Blue jays will not be in a position (no matter what they say pre-season) to even come close to a playoff spot. They never will be as long as they play in the East. Their fans are dwindling and so is their buying power with a weaker Canadian $ (having to pay in US $).

If the Yanks are serious about getting an ACE in the rotation, then they will have to part with some good young talent, and a quality starter to ease the burden. Say goodbye to Kennedy, Hughes, Cabrera and probably an infielder. As a write this, I can’t think of a quality stater in the current rotation…man are we in trouble…LOL

Jays

The Jays are definitely trying to be contenders every year, as futile as it may be. Their rotation, at least with Burnett in it, is fairly strong. Marcum, McGowan, and Litsch are young and getting better.

They may be looking to deal Halladay, but there’s conflicting info on that. And they wouldn’t deal him to their division rival. He’s always confounded the Yanks. Why would they give him away to us, even if they got Hughes and Cano for him? That’s at least what it would take, by the way, and we’re not going to deal both of those guys, if even one. At this point, Cabrera would just be a spare part, like a prospect. He doesn’t have much value right now.

And we don’t have a quality starter? 2nd-in-Cy-Young-voting Chien-Ming Wang—ever heard of him? And Joba Chamberlain, who every team would clamor to have if they could. These names ring a bell?

I like Volquez a lot but don't see the Reds giving him up anytime soon.

I’d love to see him in pinstripes though. The guy went off last year, then hit a rough patch, but still finished up with CY Young-like numbers. He’s also not even 26, so I think Volquez would be too much to pursue without giving up Hughes and probably another prospect in addition to Nady. If we get Tim Lincecum, world hunger will not only stop but turn into an obesity plague.

Sorry to raise your ire Swanky,

I meant a quality starter after Joba and Chien-ming. BTW the Blue Jays and the Yanks made deals in the past (1 of which was for a 3 time CY Young starter)

True

But I don’t think in this climate would they do that. With Burnett questionable at best to return to them, and with the AL East tighter than ever, I don’t foresee Halladay landing with us. I’d love to see it happen, but I’d be shocked.

You would need to give up a lot to get Cain. Sabean has mentioned he is unlikely to trade the young guns unless he gets an overwhelming offer. Not sure who you have available for trade, but I’d say it’s doubtful.

Cano must go

I posted in October a Cano package for Cain. Something like Cano, Kennedy and Nady for Cain and Rowand.

I think the Yanks have to trade Cano because he is the only chip to get quality. I know he had an off year and if that drives the price too high then the Yanks should wait until the next off season.

I am very concerned over the pitching situation. I do not want to see Cano go, but I think we could partly compensate with a Hudson substitute.

We need pitching…
