Moose to Retire
Ken Rosenthal reports that Mike Mussina is expected to announce his retirement shortly.
This was expected but certainly saddens Yankee fans throughout the nation. Moose had possibly the best season of his career this year (only 20 win season), and was a short way away from 300. This however does give Andy Pettitte a little bit of hope. Right now I see our rotation as follows:
C.C. Sabathia
Chin Ming Wang
A.J. Burnett
Joba Chamberlain
Andy Pettitte
Of course there is a possibility of signing Lowe but given other teams interest (Baltimore, Detroit, Boston, White Sox, Cubs) I find it doubtful.
Certainly Moose will be missed in the Bronx.

If it’s true, thanks, Moose, for all you have done.
Regardless of never winning a World Series with the Yanks, you still definitely left your mark.

MOOOOSE!
I’m really gonna miss cheering for you! He did an awesome job his entire career and it should never be looked over at all! I give it up for a man who did as well as he did entirely in the AL EAST!

you
cant even think about retiring Moose, while 21 and 51 are not hanging in monument park.. It seems as if they aren’t going to retire Paulie, therefore 35 is up for grabs IMO

Agreed
It is ridiculous that 21 is not retired. Paulie epitomized what it means to be a Yankee. I wonder why Hank is so reluctant to put him in monument park.

Musing Moose ...
Perhaps because I’m old school, I don’t think we should be in the habit of retiring “good” or “great for a season” players. Maris? No. Martin? No. Munson? Yes. Guidry? No. Jackson? No. I absolutely loved Don Mattingly, but I don’t believe his number or O’Neill’s, Moose’s, Cone’s, Bernie’s should be hanging. Should any of these “good” players make it to the Hall, then I would consider retiring the number. I know most will likely disagree, and that’s fine. But if we’re going to retire all these “good” players, then we need to consider Randolph, Winfield, Righetti, and Lyle in the debate.
Switching gears, slightly, I need to apologize to Mike Mussina. I know he doesn’t read PA, he’s probably reading Voltaire or something, but I wrote him off after last season and I was dead wrong. I’m sorry. Had he walked away then, Yankee fans would have missed an incredibly gutsy pitching performance by a true Hall of Famer in my opinion. Again, I’m sorry Mike. Thanks for the memories, and enjoy your retirement!

Everybody forgets
The Yankees don’t have to retire the number to put the player in monument park.
Miller Huggins, the Yanks first great manager never wore a number but has a major monument.
Jack Ruppert, Joe McCarthy, Ed Barrow, Mel Allen, Bob Sheppard, have plaques hanging on the wall.
Lefty Gomez and Allie Reynolds have plaques, even though their numbers (11 and 22) are in regular circulation. Red Ruffing’s 15 was already retired for Munson, and it wasn’t double retired the way Yogi and Dickey’s 8 was.
So I think the Yanks should have a Bernie Williams Day in 2009. Hang a plaque and make sure the next guy wearing 51 is a homegrown player with some talent. Paul O’Neill Day can come in 2010 on the same plan.
