My Yankees 2009 Preview

Ok, I have obviously no clew what is going on in the Yankees general manager's office right now, except for what they show me on TV and the internet.

All that aside, these are my thoughts on what the lineup, rotation, bullpen, and bench might look like next season.

We'll start with the lineup.

1). Johnny Damon LF.  Damon overcame a horrible start to the season to hit .303 and hit 17 homers out of the lead-off spot last year. No reason to change.

2). Derek Jeter SS.  Jeter will be hitting 2-hole, and playing shortstop for the Yanks for as long as he wants to, no doubt about it.

3). Xavier Nady RF.  Nady played great for the Yanks in the second half of the season, and seemed to love the New York atmosphere. (He should be used to it, h played for the Mets.) He would be a great replacement to Bobby if we don't re-sign him.

4). Alex Rodriguez 3B.  The best player in the game, period. He is on pace for, maybe, 800 home runs before he retires. Fans should be happy that he plays for the Yanks.

5). Jorge Posada C.  Jorge didn't play much last season, due to a shoulder injury. He says he will be ready to go for the season, and wants to catch. He has always been a reliable hitter, not to mention, he is a switch-hitter. He fits good in the 5 spot.

6). Robinson Cano 2B.  Cano has something to prove this season. He had a great season in 2007, competing for the batting title with Joe Mauer of the Twins, and his teammate, Derek Jeter. However, 2008 wasn't great, not even good. Cano went on a tear after the All-Star break, due to a visit to see his father. You can be sure he and his father spend a lot of time together over the off-season.

7). Hideki Matsui DH.  Godzilla is still a good hitter. Injuries have hurt him the last two seasons. However he was hitting over .300 in the games he did play in, and before his writst injury two seasons ago, he was an MVP candidate. Don't give up on Matsui, he will be back.

8). Nick Swisher 1B.  Scrappy player who played for the White Sox last season. Players who play for Ozzie Guillien usually play the game the right way. It will be interesting to see him this season.

9). Brett Gardner CF.  Gardner is very, very fast, and could score a lot of runs out of the 9 hole in this lineup. He is a walking double, so teams have to pitch to him. He plays great in center, and is nothing but hussle. Girardi loves him, which always helps.

BENCH- OF Melky Cabrera, C Jose Molina, IF Cody Ransom, OF Justin Christiansen

Now let's talk about the rotation. I think we should definately play a huge role in the Free Agent Market when it comes to pitching.

1). CC Sabathia LHP.  We will offer him an offer that cannot be refused. He is the best pitcher in baseball right now, and should fit in well in New York.

2). Chin-Ming Wang RHP.  Wang had a foot injury last season. He was pitching pretty well before the injury, and it seems like he is going to have a full recovery and have another productive year in 2009.

3).  A.J. Burnett RHP.  Burnett led the A.L. in strikeouts last season, and is a key free agen on the market right now. If the Yanks could grab him and Sabathia, they could dominate in the Ameican League next season.

4). Joba Chamberlain RHP.  Joba would fit perfect in the fourth spot in the rotation. He brings an explosiveness to the game, that not too many teams have in the 4 spot in their roatations.

5). Andy Pettite LHP.  Who better to be the veteran leader of the rotaion than Yankee great, Andy Pettite. He also brings a second left-handed arm to the end of the rotation, which could be huge throughout the year.

Bullpen- RHP Brian Bruney, RHP Jose Veras, RHP Edwar Ramirez, RHP Darrell Rasner, LHP Damaso Marte, RHP Mariano Rivera

I think with that rotation, the Yanks won't need to break the 1000 run mark. I'm excited, and I can't wait!

Go Yanks!

Thats an amazing team...

What about signing Mark Teixera and Derek Lowe. With Derek Lowe the rotation would be even more unstoppable. Mark Teixera is just an added piece, but Swisher needs to be a team player before he is good.

It's a good team, but not an amazing one. Don't get ahead of yourself.

Just running the projections, I’m pinning this team at 722 RA and 823 RS, good enough for a 91.53 win pythag. A wild card run, really.
The Yankees can tack on another win if Derek Jeter can play near average defense again.
You lose a considerable amount of wins if Jorge Posada can no longer catch, though.

If Sabathia takes 23.3mil/yr, Pettitte at 13mil, Burnett at 15mil, the payroll comes out at around 206mil. Anyone who wants to sign Teix or Lowe or Mussina is being a bit naive about the financial situation.
Damon, Matsui, and Nady are all becoming free agents after 2009 cutting the payroll by 32mil (174mil) and leaves the team with holes in LF, RF, and DH.
Rick Ankiel STL, Matt Holliday COL, Jayson Werth PHI, Vladimir Guerrero LAA, and Jason Bay BOS are the big OF names that might hit the market and arn’t aging . Other than someone like Nick Johnson, these are your DH possibilities, too.

I would love to see Willie Harris manning LF and Jayson Werth in RF, given their relative underrated value. Willis is a great left fielder, really, but because of his lack of a big bat he goes under the radar. Werth is a great hitter and a great defender — a prime combination. CF can be dealt with using a combination of Melky/Gardner/AJax. DH will remain a question mark, but it’ll be a little tight to make the money stretch without some name coming up in the farm system.

I think your run projections are off

The team gave up 723 runs last year, which included 200 innings of 5.80 ERA baseball from Pavano, Ponson, Rasner, and Hawkins.

I will pass on Burnett.

I think a rotation of Sabatthia, Wang, Pettitte, Chamberlain, and Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves, coupled with a bullpen of Rivera/Ramirez/Veras/Marte/Bruney/Melancon/Sanchez can allow 50 fewer runs than the team did last year.

That means 675 runs allowed to 825 score – a 150 run differential. Only two teams had that last year.

i would

love to see A 3rd signing whether it be lowe or mussina, and have Joba go back to the pen for good until mo retires.. then he can close.

what do you guys think the chances of that happening are?

Zero

The Yanks want Joba to be a starter and that’s where he’ll stay. As he should be.

Worry about Mo’s replacement in two years if he does indeed retire after the 2011 season.

Unfinished Business

NYY will go hard after CC and Burnett. I do not like an idea of signing Derek Lowe. He is getting old and I am not sure why NYY would give him 3 yr. / 40~45M contract which is overpaying by a lot. As for above line-up, I just don’t think Nady and Posada will protect A-Rod. NYY needs another significant bat in the middle whether it be Tex or Manny to protect A-Rod.

Because, statistically speaking, Lowe is better than Burnett.

He’s more durable as well and will likely be cheaper. Even with his age, he should be great.
The only real knock against Lowe is the fact that the Yankees don’t have the greatest IF defense, which may not be conducive to a groundballer such as himself.

One would think that if they are not

going to use IPK or Hughes that they would at least trade them for someone that they would use on a regular basis. It seems to me like they might have some value.

Pitching wins championships,

so I’m not sure if we’ll be able to get Tex. I think we are focusing on C.C. obviously, and I think we will add Burnett as well.

I’m not sold on Kennedy, and Phil Hughes still has something to prove. I remember watching the no-no he took into the 6th against the Rangers, then got hurt. If he can stay healthy, he will be a great pitcher.

I don’t think that the plans for Joba are going to be replacing Mo. Joba wants to be a starter, and I think he will start the season at the bottom of the rotation. It is time for Joba to start pitching like a big leaguer, and time for Hank to stop worrying about pitch-count and let the guy pitch.

If we do not land the second big pitcher, than I think we will go hard after Tex. He would be a great 3-hole, hitting in front of A-Rod.

No way Nady hits third for us this year or we're in trouble

I like the early projections Trey, good stuff. I just have to disagree with Nady hittin third. I wondered why you would think he would hit there? I would rather have matsui there in your projected lineup over him. I still think yanks land the big bat they want and that player hits in front of arod.

I like what Nady did

last year for us. He seems to fit in well with the group of guys we got in the clubhouse. You have to remember that the last two seasons, Matsui has been plagued by injuries. I don’t know how well he can protect Arod, when Nady is young is in the prime of his career.

If we go out and get a big bat, then I definately would rather have that hitter protecting Arod, but until then, I think Nady is the way to go.

I like nady trey but....

I just got to believe we can do better for a third place hitter in 09
