So, It really is all about the pitching

By trading for Nick Swisher the Yankees have signaled their intent regarding several subjects we have been discussing.

It seems the available FA money is going to pitching.  This acquistion greatly reduces the likelyhood they will sign any big money position players in the FA market.

They were willing to grab Swisher when the White Sox sold low.  I my eyes we gave up nothing.  WB never seemed to me to find a way to contribute in pinstripes.  The two pitchers we gave up were far enough back in our depth chart to be completely expendable.  This is in fact the kind of deal I have advocated in saying we needed to turn some pitching prospects into some other value. We have so many young arms we cannot use them all.

Now we need a utility infielder.  Any inhouse candidates you guys know of?

Cody Ransom would be fine.

agreed...

he seems to hold his own, he’s got some pop, and he’s solid defensively.

either way

there a dozen potentially ok guys you can sign to minor league deals. fussing over utility players is dumb.

Giving up on Tex

I like the Swisher deal as insurance. If Swisher doesn’t rebound like we all hope though, everyone in the Yankees universe will bitch and moan next year about how we could have had Texeira and instead we got this bum hitting .219. I say the Yankees still need to signg Tex and use Swisher in a four man outfield rotation (unless they intend to move one of the other OF’s on the roster).

ugh I'm so sick of Tex

We need another guy signed to an immovable contract into his mid 30s, right? Maybe we’ll share some of the A-Rod love with him.

No to Mark Texeira. No to AJ Burnett. No to Derek Lowe.

Swisher will be fine. He had an abnormally low BABIP last year. Keep him at first, sign CC and Pettitte and we should be in fine shape.

totally agree

I believe that Tex is overated and I don’t want to commit to the years and money he wants. Who knows maye the Prince will be playing first base in a couple of years or we let Montero play first and Romine catch. Hopefully they both develop into the prospects they are being touted as. My favorite moment with Tex was that game he crashed into Posada at the plate and nearly knocked him out, but Posada had the last laugh with a game winning HR. I always liked Posada, but after that game I looked at him a whole different perspective, he’s a tough SOB. The Swisher move was a good move and if he rebounds we could always use him a trade deadline bate.

I don't

believe Tex is overrated. He consistently puts up good numbers and probably would do well in NY. That said, I’d rather we sink the money into pitching—a much tougher commodity to find these days. If Swisher sucks people will moan, but we’ll always be able to find another first-baseman. Look at the Yankee championship years. In the 70s we had Chambliss—a solid but certainly not spectacular player. In the 90s we had Martinez—again nothing spectacular. We don’t need to field an all-star at every position. We need guys that fit a role and can get the job done. Tex is too much like Arod, and frankly one Arod is more than enough for any team.

totally agree

1B is some much easier to find than quality starting pitching. We already have tried to outhit the entire league with no pitching/defense and we see where that got us… Pitching, defense, and timely hitting my friends is exactly what we had in the late 90’s.

Kinda like Marino ...

I’m a Dolphins fan, and during the Marino years, we thought we could outscore everyone. The result: ZERO Super Bowl wins. We can’t outslug the league. Championships are won on pitching. Let’s build a solid rotation—I suspect it will take us much further.

Let's Keep Focus

Tex is a great player. However , C.C. Sabathia is what we need. and I agree to signing Pettite also. CC, Wang, Joba, Pettite, Moose or Hughes. Too good.

Swisher is a hussle guy which is what Joe loves (Brett Gardner). Swisher could be a great fit for a championship run in 2009

by YankeeTrey on Nov 14, 2008 4:32 PM EST   0 recs

Justin Morneau

Would be a nice fit at first and is a free agent either next year or the year after. The Yanks could try to move for him as well.

by ilBrutto on Nov 14, 2008 4:46 PM EST   0 recs

Morneau isn't that good

We already have a 1B who can slug .480 (Swisher). He doesn’t have an MVP trophy or the sexy RBIs, but those things are mostly meaningless anyway.

by 3460kuri on Nov 17, 2008 4:42 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Morneau

I agree he would be a great fit, but will we be able to afford him if we spend all of our money this year?

by YankeeTrey on Nov 14, 2008 4:59 PM EST   0 recs

ive said this many times

i doubt the yankees sign mark. our future cant handle 2 plays in their 30s inked for 10 yr contracts(3460kuri said this too). try to ink cc, if not, sign aj or lowe. make sure joba is in the rotation at least for this season(assuming we have mo all season) and then wait for hughes to mature(hes pitching well in Arizona)

I don't see

why they can’t sign them both, if your going to need to save money, i would much rather that they save it on the back end rotation, 2 great player is always better than 1 great and 2 maybe good guys
