Nick Swisher to the Yanks for Jeff Marquez & Betimet

At least according to ESPN

This is a great move.  Swisher is a solid player coming off a bad, but mostly unlucky, year.  I forget if he's signed to an extension or not, if not, they've got at least 2 years of a decent, young outfielder who can play all 3 positions.

Marquez probably falls into the class of guys the Yanks traded for Nady/Marte - serviceable, but not much more than 5th starters.  In the Yanks case, he's already behind Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, Giese, Brackman, etc. so they're not giving up a piece that they're going to miss.

He's signed through...

2011, with a team option for 2012:
Salaries as follows:
08:$3.5M, 09:$5.3M, 10:$6.75M, 11:$9M,
12:$10.25M club option ($1M buyout)

I don't about great

it is an interesting move. he’s also a guy who can play first base… but he needs to hit for a better avg. to play up to his value by the end of his current deal, per Cott’s:

 09:$5.3M, 10:$6.75M, 11:$9M,
12:$10.25M club option ($1M buyout)

i will say i like this better than bringing in mike cameron.

Really? Cameron's a similar hitter and much better defensively.

Of course, Swisher’s cheaper and signed longer, so I guess I can see your point.

Does this mean Damon will be the CF next year? Or does it mean Tex won’t be signed? And does it show confidence that Posada can catch next year?

Credence to Sherman

Now that 1B is filled, does this lend credence to Joel Sherman’s assertion that Yanks are going to make a hug offer to C.C. ? After all, the team doesn’t need the $100+MM to lure Teixeira.

by faketeams on Nov 13, 2008 4:34 PM EST reply actions

They need to upgrade their offense and they sign

the player with the worst BA in the majors last season. The brain trust of this team is brain dead. He hit .225 with RISP and .177 with RISP and two outs. They need another major bat in this lineup like Mark Texeira (with a great glove too) and they settle for this mediocre player.

2006-2008 RISP .223, RISP 2 outs .241

What a f-in joke.

Why do you assume

that this trade precludes the Yankees from signing Teixeira? Open free agency hasn’t even started yet, and you’ve decided that the Swisher acquisition is instead of Teixeira. It seems to me that having Swisher would be a good backup plan should Teixeira not sign with the Yankees. The guy can play four positions, and spent the majority of his games last season in center field. If the Yankees do sign Texeira, Swisher could easily play five games a week as a super utility, giving rest to Teixeira, Damon, Nady, Gardner/Cabrera, and Matsui. Having depth is a key to success.
Also, you are bashing Swisher after his worst career season. He’s never going to hit for a great average, but he usually hits above .250, with good OBP and SLG. And we gave up spare change for him. This is a good pickup by Cashman.

Sadly

agreed. I gotta go smoke a bowl over this. Fuck my Yanks. It’s like we’re brain dead. We can bat him a Cano back to fuckin back. AHHHHH!!!!!!

i'm surprised how many yankee fans don't like this deal

you’re buying low on a player off an unlucky season.

by Cheezombie on Nov 13, 2008 6:32 PM EST reply actions

he was incredibly unlucky

He had a line drive % of 20.9 and a ba/bip of .249…… He had a down year and still hit 24 hrs. He is a great addition to this team.

Good Deal

Listen, Nick Swisher fits perfectly with the yankees. hear me out here. We gave up nothing really usefull, and we have him signed for a good amount of $$. now that we have him, we don’t even have to think about re-signing Giambi. Something every1 is overlooking, his OBP. hes gonna walk 100 times, he can play a solid D at firstbase, and 2 yrs ago, he hit 35 homers, batted .250 and walked 100 times. thats the real Nick Swisher, not the down season he had last year. Also, its not like we are fully commiting him to play every single day. hes probally going to play 1st base and some Of, mb some Dh too. i also think hes a defensive upgrade over Matsui and Abreu. Put Damon in Left, Swisher in center, Nady in right, Matsui as Dh.

Money not a thang

for the Yankees, so it can’t be looked at as a plus. Quite honestly I don’t want this bum taking 500 PA’s to gather 110 hits. Its a joke people think this is a good deal. If anything its a fail safe in case we don’t get Tex. It would be nice to see him flying all over the outfield but he is not a Yankee, to me.

by ProudYankee on Nov 13, 2008 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

He hit .240 on balls in play last year

Total fluke. They gave up nothing for a guy they were buying low on. This will probably be the best trade of the offseason.

by 3460kuri on Nov 13, 2008 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

We'll see

I think he is another dead bat in a lineup that needs life. Sorry no matter how you cut it. 500 AB’s sub .250 BA. I don’t see him improving much.

by ProudYankee on Nov 13, 2008 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Adam Dunn

worest hitter ever, who cares if he’s on pace to hit over 500 dinger easily? he hits .230s!!!!!!!! ZOMG!!!!!! Juan Pierre is a million times bettah!!!!

I'm sick of Yankees fans pretending money isn't an issue.

If it’s not, why not sign CC AND Lowe AND Burnett? Because there IS a budget even though it’s much higher than any other team.

When you can develop cheap young players or trade for effective guys like Swisher, that’s money you can spend somewhere else. No, you don’t have to skimp most places, especially on crappy players. But saving money when you can only helps in the long run.

also,

He wasn’t a first round pick by Billy Beane for nothing. Also hes only 28.

I'm not sure if we can afford that. (Yes, I realize we're talking about the Yankees)

Sabathia (25mil) + Marte (4mil) + Pettitte/Mussina (13Mil?) + Swisher (5.3mil) puts the payroll at 204.7mil. Teixeira will put them practically to 225mil, greater than last year.

by SanjiWatsuki on Nov 13, 2008 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, disregard that number.

This is what I get for plugging numbers into the wrong spreadsheet. =p

by SanjiWatsuki on Nov 13, 2008 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

How about a new number?

Also, if Pettitte/Mussina are going to cost $13MM, Burnett or Lowe at only a few MM more is a much better deal.

much rather have sabathia than teixeira

i would be shocked if we manadged to sign both guys, and if i had to ick 1 or the other i’d take sabathia. we have a switch hitting 1st basemen now.

What a steal for you guys.

Say…is that Brian Cashman’s contract up yet?

by Omerta on Nov 13, 2008 7:40 PM EST reply actions

nice move

i like it a lot. Swisher is versatile, filling two potential holes (CF and 1b) admirably, a switch-hitter, has a lot of potential, great patience/discipline, and is just 27 and under contract for several more years. the Sox are selling low on a guy with plus potential. he’s had an OPS+ over 100 every year of his career except 08 (and that was a far from horrible 92).

Cash also gave up basically spare parts for a starter. Betemit could be a nice player, but he’ll just never get enough PT with the Yankees. Marquez projects as maybe a nice back end starter, but there are a LOT of guys in the org. with higher upsides and better chances to be an impact pitcher. Nunez is actually the biggest loss imo, he has great k/9, and possibly would have entered the bullpen fray in 09.
