Rumors and innuendo - Nov. 13
For whatever it's worth, Joel Sherman believes the Yankees will soon make an offer to CC Sabathia worth $150 million over six years. A friend of Sabathia's said:
He is mature enough and realistic enough to know that the Yankees might not make it close. And if it is not close - no matter how much he likes the West Coast and likes hitting - he is not going to walk away from $25 million. This is not rocket science. It is about how much more the Yanks will spend than anybody else.
- Scott Boras brushed aside LA's three-year, $60 million offer to Manny Ramirez, saying he would take 'serious offers' on Friday. If it was any other agent, I'd say he was overplaying his hand.

Is it just me??
I don’t like this one bit. Sabbathia seems like a great pitcher (from what I’ve seen of him) but this to me seems like more of Hank trying to make a splash. I know this is a broad generalization, but I think the Yanks have to get back to a more “developmental” mode and get away from the BS that hampered the team in the 80’s (ie always signing the priciest FA’s etc). I think the Yanks need to focus more on the DRAFT and less on just blowing the competition out of the water on the FA market. It hasn’t worked for the team in the last 7 yrs and I don’t think it will work for the next seven years. Ok, sorry for the soapbox moment.
Big coin for a big arm
I agree it sounds like we are prepared to blast it out of the park. I guess on one hand I"m glad we have that ability, but on the other hand, I tend to agree. The problem is, however, NY fans aren’t a patient lot. We want winners every year. Anything short of winning it all is failure.
Do we need CC? Sure. But so does 100 percent of the league. Is it too much? I guess if we are willing to pay it, it’s not too much. Personally, I’d back the truck up and give him what he wants. If not, he’ll end up hurting us in other ways.

yes and no
like kuri said, signing the elite FAs usually DO work out: Mussina, Giambi (for the Yanks), Manny (for Boston), Beltran (Mets), RJ (Zona), etc.
what has killed us are the lesser FAs, that for a variety of reasons such as they’re coming off a career year, George likes him, best FA at that position that year (which doesn’t always mean much), etc., they get signed and proceed to disappoint.
the farm certainly has to be cultivated, but it shouldn’t prevent us from using our main advantage to assemble the best team possible, and that means adding CC.
CC Sabatthia is the best free agent on the market, an ace-left hander pitcher who is under 30. These guys don’t come up on the free agent market often.
Signing him is not the kind of move that kills a team with the financial resources the Yankees have, it’s signing the second-tier guys and third-tier guys – AJ Burnett, Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, Kyle Farnsworth – that wastes money and ties down roster spots, hampering a team for years.
yanks trade for swisher. Betemeit, Marquez and Jhonny Nunez. Yanks also get Kanekoa Texeira from the Sox. Teixiera is a minor league reliever. here is the link to the story http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3700869.
Also if you are interested in checking out a pretty good new blog visit ShawnHaviland.blogspot.com. Its by a minor league baseball player who went to Harvard.
