Casey Kotchman

I read somewhere that the braves really like Nady and they would probably prusue him in a trade. I they said that Casey Kotchman would be the perfect fit. He is young and very good defensively My question is how good of a player is casey (Im not very familiar with him) and would we have to give up more than the braves? Also, how long would we have control of Casey if we were to trade for him?

Stick with Nady

Nady has proved himself as a Yankee for the short time he played with them. Casey is a young first baseman not to mention hes cheap. He hit .272, 14HRs, and 74 RBIs last season in 143 games. Although he looks like he’ll be a solid first baseman the Braves will have to give the Yankees much more for a trade.

I don’t even think it’s worth it, Nady is a great outfielder and has a very strong bat in the Yankees lineup. Don’t trade Nady.

I'd consider it ...

We are cluttered in the of and Nady is a second-tier player in my book. We haven’t seen him play for the entire season, and while I like him, he’s 29-30 and has never been an everyday player until very recently. Kotchman is very good at first, and while he’s not necessarily an all-star, I’d ask do we really need another?

Look at our great teams of the past … O’Neill, Martinez, Girardi, Brosious, Williams … all were solid, workman-like performers, but none were heart-stopping superstars like those we carry today. We need guys that “fit” in like Brosious—solid .280 guys with some pop and great defense. I’m for pursuing this. I really don’t think we NEED to have Tex in pinstripes. We need guys like Kotchman, and yes, Nady (my issue with him is that he doesn’t play great defense, and we are already crowded out there).

i would agree with Ronster

but Fluke: “Nady is a great outfielder” ??

He is a serviceable outfielder and a decent bat. There is no guarantee that he heven duplicates his offensive output from this past season.

I wouldn’t have a problem if Nady stays on board, but if we could get a solid, young, cheap option at 1B, I am all for it.

Yeah

Yeah, I went over board with Nady being a ‘great outfielder’. He does have a strong bat though, when I say strong I mean, he can hit for the gaps and for power.

If they were to trade for Nady for Kotchman I’d think the Yankees would be getting someone else along with it.

..

I also think we could acquire Kotchman for less than Nady.

Keep Nady

Hey keep Nady and get TEX!

Signing Teixeira

is the best option, because it will cost us nothing but money. If we sign Teixeira, we would have a better first baseman, and we could use Nady as trade bait toward filling another hole.

sort of work

but that would mean keeping Abreu around? ehhhh…

If they could find a servicable RF somewhere then it works, Kotchman’s biggest issue is his health, though Nady’s hardly the picture of health either.

Kotch’s upside is considerablly better than Nady’s though, despite his poor play in Atlanta.

I guess this is a good alternative plan is we don’t go after Teix, trade Nady for Kotch, sign Juan Rivera for RF . then go for Manny or Dunn in left, (later DH) and go for the CC/AJ thingy.

do you think it would be an even trade or would we have to give them a prospect

by geno227 on Oct 9, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

I would do it.

That way we get 5 years younger.

The ink would be dry on this one

We have a crowded outfield as is. Trading a 29 year old Nady to the Braves for a 25 year old slick fielding first-baseman eliminates our need to sign Tex, and as I’ve been preaching here for several weeks, we need to get back to the late 90s mentality of not having a freakin’ all-star in every position. We tried that in the 80s, and it simply didn’t work.

Kotchman is a puzzle piece. He’s hard-nosed, hard playing. Nady also fits the bill, and I’d hate to see him go, but if we can land another puzzle-piece guy like Baldelli (who I think would come cheap) we’ve not broken the bank, and we’ve gone a long way in returning to that late 90s philosophy.

For those who think Baldelli would bomb, I’d answer that it’s much easier finding a quality outfielder than a quality first-baseman.

but our team

would be much better with Tex AND Nady rather than just Kotchman (who’s not that great of a hitter to start with).

by Travis G on Oct 13, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No to Kotchman

His career batting line is .269/.336/.413. He is not an adequate hitter for a first baseman. He would barely be an adequate hitter as a second baseman, catcher, shortstop, or centerfielder for that matter. I’d rather see Giambi at first next year than Kotchman.

I know, cue the “we need to get younger and better on defense” argument.

That only works if the young players can both hit and field better than the guys they’re replacing. I agree we don’t need an all-star at every position (ie Texeira), but I don’t buy into the “gritty” “scrappy” “sum-is-greater-than-the-parts” baloney. If you put statistically inferior hitters into a lineup, the lineup will suffer. Casey Kotchman may be a fine fielder, but as a first baseman, there is no defensive contribution he can make that adequately counters his .713 OPS.

Kotchman's line ...

Kotchman is still climbing the curve. In the minors he was nothing short of a magician with the bat. He’s barely got 1,000 at bats, and many will tell you that that is simply not enough to determine a player’s line. I’d pull the trigger in a heartbeat.

I’d rather throw money at CC, Peavy, Burnett than Tex.
