Beltran

So I saw on YES that the Beltran rumor is flying around that the Metropolitans are looking for a 2B...any thoughts on Cano for Beltran?

Personally I like Gardner and the devil is in the details but if we could get him for IPK, Cano and Melky, I'd do it. Yes Ajax hasa future in pinstripes but it's not going to be this coming season and getting a solid hitter in CF takes the pressure off off rushing him to the show...not to mention Beltran would look great in the lineup.

I dunno

I like the idea, but I just dont think Beltran can handle NY. He did best in Houston where no one cares. I think with him, it is all mental. But who knows, it probably is with Cano too.

umm

hes been in NY since like 2005. and hes put up OPS+ as a met of 96, 150,126, 131. According to BIS +/- system, Beltran is still one of the best , if not the best CFer in baseball.

I like

how you just snuck Manny into the lineup.

And I while I've heard rumors

I see no reason to believe that Matsui or Nady can play 1st.

Nady

has 82 career games at 1st base in the majors.

Met’s blog have noted how there was a rumor that Beltran MIGHT be avalible, but the Cano part is pure fabrication.

From a Mets perspective, they already owe Castillo 6M for 09 anyway (GJ Minaya, no one saw a oft injured no pop 2B who was losing his legs to not be worth 2/12 contracts!) getting Cano doesn’t save them much unless the Yankees throw a ton of Money and/or prospects on top of that.

which feels wrong from the Yankee perspective, who’s already seeing the risk of too many expensive players without a emerging young core to trade away the few piece that resemble the later.

Yes Nady

has played quite a bit at 1st… so he def could play there if needed, id prefer him in RF though.

Most people have the mets making a big play for Orlando Hudson, so Castillo is being looked at as a sunk cost in most cases. However, I agree with you in the sense that I am not sure Omar Minaya sees it that way.

well

Hudson is sort of like a better Castillo, not quiet as bad, but also somewhat overrated.

which is also a reason that this would make a questionable deal for the Yankees, since them trading Cano would require them to bring in Hudson , which combined with Beltran up their cost considerablly already and would put more pressure of them addressing even bigger needs (1B and SP)

From the yankee POV, they can live with Damon for 09 then look again to see if Austin Jackson is ready or something.

I don't understand the logic..

Carlos Beltran will be 31 in April. Why would you trade our future 5th starter, 4th OF, and our young all star second basemen who still hasn’t reached his ceiling? Especially for a guy who will be on the decline after one year.. Sure he’s great, but is a great year of him worth our future? IMO, Cano will be a .330 hitter for years to come..

I could do Melky, IPK, and Damon though..

Actually:

Melky, IPK, Damon, and 1 or 2 decent prospects would be best for Beltran. Otherwise it’s lopsided.

Mets need bullpen

Think bull pen and Cano.

Pete A mentioned Veras, although he didn’t believe it.

this would be a coup for the yankees and there's no way the Mets would go for it

Beltran is still one of the ten position best players in baseball, thanks to his combination of very good offense and world-class defense. He’s earning $18MM per season, which is a deal these days (Tex is a step or two down and will sign for $20-$25MM per year). People need to get over Beltran’s low AVG and lay-low demeanor and realize he’s a stud.

Many of us know he's a stud

talent

talent point of view I’d agree, roster construction wise though would be a bit questionable.

this move is a automatic 12M increase in payroll, and they also need either Hudson or Ellis (let’s say 6-8M) so something like 18-20M increase. it might take away some of their leverage to go for Teixiera and CC and whatever else they need.

in the end, it doesn’t make sense for either side, for the Met’s it’s trading away their top player for lesser players, for the Yankees it’s trading away more youth for older player adding payroll in what’s probably their 3rd to 4th position needs.

agreed

You are asking for way too much here (not you sky, the original poster)

#1, Why would the Mets ever accept that package? They wouldn’t give up an All-Star CF with great defense and a great bat for a mediocre 2B with possible potential, a bad OF, and a young P prospect who struggled in the majors (not saying Kennedy is gonna suck, but he’s far from being ML ready).
This deal would probably have to start with Hughes, and they’d go from there.

#2, Manny? CC? Why not just throw in Teixeira while you’re at it?
