Being A Yanks Fan Outside of NYC
Is it just me or do Yankees fans always get the short end of the stick when it comes to being a fan but living in another state? I am a lifelong Yankees fan from Arlington, VA, a Northern Virginia city located 5 minutes from Washington D.C. My parents are from Staten Island and Queens respectively, so maybe that has something to do with it. I've been to several games at Yankees stadium, and I always go to games when I'm up there visiting family in the summer. But people never ask me about all that, all I ever get is, "Bandwagoner!" Or I get people saying I should root for the Nationals or Orioles. I'm 23 and I've always rooted for the Yanks through good and bad times. I never hear this same hatred towards Red Sox or Dodgers or Phillies fans who don't live in those respective city. Somebody please tell me, why so much venom towards Yanks fans from around the good old US of A?

i went to college in Boston
but fortunately it was during the good times (1999-2003).
yeah, it’s mostly jealousy. or the fact that when a team does win, all of a sudden people start wearing paraphernalia of that team so they all look like frontrunners. dont worry, they’re HATAHS.

I've rooted for the Yanks for almost 40 years.....
and I live in Michigan. Fans here hate the Yanks, or they love them. They hate the success the Yanks have and complain about them “buying” the pennant. Yet, when the lowly Tigers tried to emulate the Yanks this year they were all for it! LOL Funny how that works isn’t it?
The Yankees have tons of fans everywhere and many of them come from the 60’s like I do, with memories of Mickey Mantle. Go Yankees!

Hang in there, Nova...
Yankees faithful living in other cities always face a double standard. I’m witnessing another growing bandwagon here in suburban Buffalo with the Red Sox. It seems the “nation” has been growing unusually large around here, with more “fans” wearing Sox caps and sporting stickers on their cars. About the only thing missing, frankly, is the bumper sticker that reads “Loyal Sox Fan Since 2004”. Oh wait! Now that the Mets are the Buffalo Bisons’ new affiliates, they’ll be wearing Mets caps next spring, lol!
Hang in there. I grew up not far from Buffalo in Niagara Falls, which was and still is a Yankee town. Let ‘em hate us. They don’t have as much to love with their own teams.

26 World Championships ... 'nuff said
People hate success and love to bring ya’ down. Remember David Cassidy? Bobby Sherman? Eve Plumb?
Willis? Poncherello? Where are they now. Once upon a time they were at the top of the heap—loved by millions and then came the resentment.
The Yankees embody success, and you’ve embraced them. No need to defend yourself against the bastids who wanna’ tear you down, my friend. I live in Southeastern VA, NASCAR and Oriole country. I hate ‘em both. I found you can’t reason with these folks, so I started carrying a blade. Threaten to cut ’em. That usually works.

What I can't stand
is that there is some unwritten rule which declares that you HAVE TO cheer for the team in which city, state, proximity you are so unfortunate to live.
Just because I make my living in a city where the jobs are plentiful and lucrative, I now have to cheer for the team closest to me? The Seattle Mariners? Really?
Or to the country in which I reside? Canada, therefore I must cheer for the Blue Jays? Can I choose to just not watch baseball then, cuz that is what these teams make me feel like doing!
I don’t understand (and probably never will) this mind set from local “fans”.

BINGO! Luckily, not everyone buys into that rule. Another great example of a fan base spread all over the country is, of all markets, Buffalo. Like the situation you describe, a lot of folks bolted from here when the job market tanked, yet they still stick with the Bills & Sabres (now THOSE are cursed teams, lol).
Luckily, here in Buffalo we still have enough Yankee fans to keep those smug “Sox” posers around here in line.

Hang in Nova
I was in the NOVA area for almost 30 years and I got the same thing. The only time anyone rooted for the Orioles, Even people from Baltimore, was during the Ripken, Murray years. They hate cause they can. Keep the love flowing

I hate it when
Hey I live in Texas but grew up in Maryland right outside of DC my mother lived in the Bronx and all her faimly is from there and I became a Yankees fans ever since I was little. I know how hard it is to cheer for the Yankees when you dont live in New York. In Maryland I was surrounded with Baltimore fans when I lived in Florida everyone suddenly became a Marlins fan when they were in the series and in Texas which I really dont get they are either Ranger fans Astro fans or Red Sox Fans? But they thing I hate the most is the people who love the Red Sox and dont even know the names of their starters. They other day I had my Yankee hat on and a guy was like there not in the post season why are you wearing that duh it because that is my team! So I asked him who is your team then he tells me the Red Sox and he said that Curt Schilling (who has not played all year) and Manny (A LA Dodger) are going to win another world series and then they will have more than they Yankees. Not only does this idoit not know who is playing for his favorite team that he has loved since he was a kid but he doesn’t even know how many championships they have. That is whay I hate. Then they call me a bandwagon fan. Kinda funny isnt it.

well, him being a Red Sox fan should've been
the first clue he didn’t know squat! LOL (just kidding, I know several really smart and good Red Sox fans) I put up with the same thing here in Michigan. Nobody wore Tigers hats until ’06. Before that they wore White Sox hats or Cubs hats. Now, they seem to just wear Red Wings hats.
When someone gives me crap that I am a bandwagon fan I just tell them “Yeah, I remember Mickey Mantle sure have been on the Bandwagon a long time haven’t I?” Then I look at their hat and ask them about a player from that era that played on their team. If they ask who, I just answer “Precisely! Go look it up!” If ya see that guy again ask him about Carl Yastrzemski……. :)

Another poser exposed!
HA! Make sure he gets to the pro shop early to get his “Schilling for MVP ’08” shirt, LOL!
I had a similar experience with a girl I used to work with, during ther Yanks collapse in ’04. She declared her love for the Sox, and although there were some educated and valid Sox fans in my office, this one actually trash talked the loudest.
That is, until the day I stopped her in the corridor, in front of her co-workers, and called her out.
I asked her if she could even name the starting lineup for the Red Sox. She COULD NOT! I made it clear to those within earshot we had a poser in our midst. Unfortunately, she was allowed to get away with continued Sox support thanks to “safety in numbers” (the other Sox fans figured if I could be outnumbered, that’s all they needed). And, our company president (also clueless about baseball) thought she too would look cool having a Sox cap in her office.
Thankfully, I now work in an office where I still deal with fans from rival clubs (Mets & Dodgers) but at least they know the game and can back themselves up. That I can respect.
