Jake Peavy

Jake Peavy's agent was basically swooning over the idea of his client being in pinstripes.  Some say it would take Hughes to get him, but I think this offer is as good as anyone could as for.  Better than what the Mets gave for Johan.  Anyone want to give ideas on a better idea than this for a trade?  Or a better idea for making our team better.  I mean, how many people are really going to miss any of those 3 guys?

Robinson Cano, Ian Kennedy, Andrew Brackman, and cash for Jake Peavy

Sign CC. Dont waste money on Lowe or Burnett(or maybe sign Lowe, we have all the money in the world, and I dont know how much the top brass likes him). Put Joba in the rotation.  Plan on Hughes making it into the rotation in August if they dont want Joba to go over innings, put Joba into setup role, and then cruise to the playoffs.  Wang would be our third starter(a perennial 19 game winner as our 3 guy? daaammnnn)

Sign Moose for 2 years 25 million.

Rotation:

CC Sabathia

Jake Peavy

CM Wang

Joba Chamberlain/Phil Hughes

Mike Mussina

Batting Order:

1) Damon

2) Jeter

3) Tex

4) A-Rod

5) Posada

6) Matsui

7) Nady

8) Melky

9) Orlando Hudson

They'll never get both Sabathia and Peavy

The Peavy option is a Plan B in case they can’t sign Sabathia.

And I don’t think Brackman has much value right now. Hughes and perhaps Austin Jackson would have to be part of any deal.

not sure why they cant

Not saying they should… but Peavy is under a pretty cheap contract… and the yankees are on “record” as saying they want two of CC, Burnettt, Lowe. Peavy’s money is probably similar to what a team would have to pay Burnett… So the question is whether or not the yankees want to give up the prospects/players to get Peavy…

If you trade Cano and not hughes… you can go ahead and sign Hudson…. which while he doesnt have cano’s upside is a pretty strong hitter and great defender.

Re:

Yeah, but San Diego isn’t going to trade away one of the best pitchers in the NL unless they get some high-end pitching talent in return.

It’s not going to be Joba, so Hughes would be the most likely choice.

Yeah

they are def. going to look for a better package then the Johan deal… so it might have to be Hughes, Ajack, etc…. and that becomes tough.

while i don't believe in clutch

a playoff rotation of CC / Peavy / Wang would make almost anyone feel a bittttt uneasy

(career playoff ERA of the 3 … 7.92/ 12.10 / 7.58 … combined record 1-8 LOL )

Get me CC, AJ, and Pettite.

CC
Wang
AJ
Pettite
Joba

Hughes and Kennedy starting at AAA. Aceves the long man in the pen. Moose will have a bad year as he always does after a good year. Pettite is reliable. AJ will give us 20 starts I believe. That’s all we can really count on him, but it’s worth not having to face him 5 times a year and possibly in the playoffs. Hughes, Kennedy, and Aceves would come up to replace injuries and what not. Joba, Wang, and CC will all have 17+ wins barring injuries, or in Joba’s case a possible “shut down” for innings limit.

Let me get this straight

You want the Yanks to sign Burnett so they won’t have to face him anymore? That’s worth spending $50M+ on a pitcher who has a long history of health issues?

Hardly seems like a sound strategy.

He could sign with an NL team and that problem would be solved without spending a dime.

I'd much rather see if Moose

would take 1 year deals before I slap AJ Burnett with multiple years. too many questions involved.

there is quiet a list of mid tier arms this year. or high risk high reward guys. outside of CC Sabathia, no one really warrents a large multi year deal from us.

No to AJ

for the reasons mentioned above.

Jake Peavy is interesting. He’s young(er), signed to a reasonable contract, but he does have an injury history, and you can’t ignore the fact that he’s played at a pitcher-friendly home stadium in arguably the weakest division in baseball. That said, he’s still probably good for a 3.50 ERA in the AL East.

For Jake Peavy, I’d tell the Padres they can have one of Hughes/Cano/Jackson, Ian Kennedy, and probably two grade B prospects. However, I suspect they’d probably want, and would ultimately get more. I just don’t think it’s worth gutting the farm to make a trade. The reason we didn’t make the playoffs this year isn’t because we lacked stars, it’s because we lacked depth. Trading 4 or 5 of our better young players for one pitcher, who’s only likely to make around 25 starts, really robs us of our depth.

Positively Peavy

I’d go after him over Burnett every day of the week. I’d also continue to go after CC. Peavy is a stud. He’s young, and has a bulldog mentality. I think he’d thrive in NY. Would I part with the farm to get him? No. I wouldn’t surrender Cano,Hughes, and Brackman. But I don’t know that we would have to. Pads owner is going through a very nasty divorce. Cash is what’s needed. Melky, Kennedy, and another high level pick—maybe Melancon (Hoffman is near the end), and cash could turn the key on this deal.

I'd probably put him in the 3.75 to 4.00 ERA range pitching in the AL, actually

He’s in the 3.25 to 3.50 ERA range when you park adjust his NL performance.

I'd do Melky, Kennedy, and change in a heartbeat

But I don’t think that deal is going to get it done.

The A’s netted 5 major prospects for Dan Haren last year, and he was signed for 3 years at a below-market contract. Peavy is a better pitcher and signed for 4 more years, I believe.

I also don’t know if teams are allowed to send significant cash in a deal, other than paying for part of a players salary.

Peavy vs Sabathia

Between Peavy and Sabathia, I would go for Sabathia for the following reasons.

1) Sabathia is more durable. Sabathia in his career has 26 complete games compare to Peavy’s 6.
2) Peavy has been injury prone in his career.
3) Sabathia knows how to win. Peavy, other than a breakout year in 2007, was under .500 in 2006 and 2008. Peavy has a better stuff, but Sabathia can pitch deep into the game and wins more games.
3) To land Peavy, NYY would have to give up a whole bunch of prospects such as Hughes + IPK + 2~3 more solid prospects.

It is true that Sabathia would cost more as he will demand a package in the neighborhood of 5 year / 100 million. NYY has about $50 M to spend so, I would go after Sabathia and Tex hard. Adding these two players would make NYY seriously contend for AL east and WS in 2009.
