There is a general agreement in the game that for the Yanks to land Sabathia they will have to significantly exceed other bidders, specifically a California team such as the Dodgers, Angels or Giants.
"As badly as we want him, you have to ask yourself, 'Is this how your want to begin a marriage? By bribing someone to come here,' " a Yankees official said. "I think it sets you up for a bad relationship if you have someone here who doesn't really want to be here and came only because of the money. And I think if you pay him a contract that blows away the last record (Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5 million deal), you are putting unreal pressure on him from the outset."

C.C.'s a great pitcher, but he's not a great fit. Let him go.

maybe a call
from Jeter would do the trick.
$150/6 vs. $137.5/6 ain’t very different (just $2 mil/year), and considering Sabathia is a year younger, that contract is probably fair also considering the year he’s having.

But Sabathia has
pitched 300 innings this year.

not quite
just ~257, and hopefully Philly sweeps so he’s done for the year.
i understand all the caution, but he is by far the best FA pitcher in years. a hard throwing lefty at 28 years old is a golden opportunity. he seems to be one of those rare cases of rubber armed quality pitchers. he hasn’t thrown less than 180 ip in ANY of his 8 year career, and has been put on the DL just twice, and never for more than 15 days and never for arm issues.

If the reports are correct we won't sign him
and probably shouldn’t.
However, it may e negotiation hype, trying to get a serious offer from a Cal team. He knows he’ll get one from NY.
