Yanks Ink Cano

Ken Rosenthal has the details:

The Yankees and Robinson Cano have reached a preliminary agreement on a contract that will guarantee him $30 million over four years and could pay him about $56 million over six years. Once contract language and a physical are completed, the deal will be done.

The agreement is for $28 million over the next four years, with a $2 million buyout in 2012 and 2013, which would bring him to exactly $30 million. The option for 2012 is for $13 million and the option for 2013 is believed to be for about $15 million.

Hmmm... I over-spent by 17 million dollars over the 6 years.

This is a steal for the Yanks.

Its alright John
when everyone talks about these deals they talk about overpaying for the arbitration years...

You just didn't realize they meant overpaying by a little bit not paying what they could make on the open market if they were a free agent tomorrow. Though by my accounting I think you would have overpayed him 17 million dollars over 4 years, because where this contract ends is right where you wanted to be its just you were gonna start out paying him 10 or 12 million.

And if a free agent comes along that blows our mind Cano will still be a steal compared to other 2nd basemen and he would still be very tradeable (not that I forsee that but its a possibility).

I really like this deal alot and I hope its just one of several moves that ensure out future for years to come.

Eleven wins in October...

Excellent
I'm pleased to see Cashman reads the blog and takes Jscape2000 so seriously.  He really got right on this after your suggestion.

i think it was the obscure
"this is not a pipe" reference that put him over the top.

I'm very excited about them locking him up..
He's one of my favorites....Hopefully he continues to grow into a power hitter, but doesn't get away from his "hitting where it's pitched" style....
