For a good laugh

after the Mets collapse, I advise all of you to go back and take a look at this piece written by Murray Chass at the beginning of September:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/04/sports/baseball/04chass.html?_r=1&ref=baseball&oref=slogin

do teams that "deserve to make the playoffs" choke away a 7 1/2 game lead with 17 to play?

i know it doesn't mean much to take pleasure in another team's agony, but for the two mets fan "friends" of mine that called me after the yanks fell to boston in '04 - this is for you.

LOL....
That some funny stuff.  I wonder what he'll be saying tomorrow.

Yeah, but...
...the season is 162 games long.  Look at the Yankees early in the season.  Did they deserve to make the playoffs then?  No.  However, some changes like getting Molina and bringing up more Baby Bombers did change the fate of the Yanks.

Still, the playoff teams are the ones who make it to the end with the best records, in their division, save the Wild Card.  The Mets have a better record than the Cubs, but the way this is set up, no dice for them.  So it's not the best four teams in a league that make the postseason.

I feel for the Mets, their fans and Willie Randolph, but that's the way it goes.

I remember that
piece. I read it, didn't get it, re-read it, still didn't get it, then decided it was beyond me. Guess there's a reason Chass doesn't post much (ever?) on Bats.

Funny
You really see how differently the two New York teams are treated when something like this happens.

Now that the collapse is official, maybe things will be different tomorrow, but thus far the Mets have gotten off easy in terms of media coverage. They should be getting torn to shreds, especially Jose Reyes and Randolph. Coverage of the Yanks was much harsher when they were 22-29, and that's nothing compared to this historic choke job.

Mike Lupica's Shooting From the Lip column today in the Daily News somehow heaped praise on Pedro Martinez, and took several shots at the Yanks. We get it Mike, the Yanks paid a lot of money for Clemens, thanks for pointing that out 10,000 times. And FYI, do you know who your stupid Mets could have used the last month and a half?  Oh, I don't know, maybe a guy like Roger Clemens! Poor Mikey will be crying himself to sleep tonight.

Funny...
Admittedly, I don't read Lupica very much and this column is a perfect example why.

He seems like a really bitter, bitter, guy.

Oh yeah, and Pedro is such a trooper to come back and pitch for a team he thought was going to the postseason.

This line made me laugh:

The Yankees had to play their division series in Cleveland the last time they were a wild card, which didn't exactly work out so great exactly 10 years ago.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean, but you can bet it is completely irrelevant to the series this week.

Lupica
as i die-hard knicks fan, i love him for all those great pieces he wrote during their glory years of the 90's, however i dont think its any secret that he is a big-time mets fan.

his article in the NY daily news this morning was a somber one, whereas if the roles were reversed, he wouldve written a whole column about the yankees and their payroll.

Yeah
He also has been writing some good stuff about the Isiah trial, but his baseball bias has reached new heights this year.

He makes such a huge deal about the Clemens money in his story on Pedro Martinez, as if Pedro came up through the Mets system and makes the minimum.

The only reason Pedro is on the Mets is because they offered him the biggest contract. Period.

i wonder
if he would still take reyes/wright over jeter/arod like hes said time and time again?

he was the same way last year when the yanks were ousted by detroit, he shit all over them.  then when beltran goes down looking to end game 7 and the crappy cardinals beat the mets, it's all about what a great job willie had done and about how great all the players were.

can't have it both ways.
