Game #134 -- Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston Red Sox

Dustin Pedroia,  2B
Coco Crisp,  CF
David Ortiz,  DH
Kevin Youkilis,  1B
Mike Lowell,  3B
J.D. Drew,  RF
Jason Varitek,  C
Eric Hinske,  LF
Alex Cora,  SS

Curt Schilling,  RHP  (8-5,  4.11)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Jason Giambi,  1B
Robinson Cano,  2B
Melky Cabrera,  CF

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (15-6,  3.95)

After losing 5 of 6 to the BoSox to begin the season series, the Yanks have come back to win 6 of 8 and tie the series at 7-7.

Wang has struggled in his career against the Red Sox (4-4, 4.78 ERA in 9 starts).  He is 2-2, 3.72 ERA against RSN at Yankee Stadium.

38pitches.com has decent but not great regular season success against the Yanks (7-6, 4.84 ERA in 22 games).  Like his fellow starters, he has been pounded by the Yankee offense this season (0-1, 7.00 ERA in 3 starts).

Both Jorge Posada and Bobby Abreu are hitting .378 (14-37) against 38pitches.com, while Robinson Cano is hitting .360 (9-25) against him.

On the other side, David Ortiz is hitting a PlayStation-like .500 (12-24, 2 2B, 2 HR) against Wang.  Good thing Manny is OUT again since his numbers are even better (.591, 13-22, 2 HR).

The featured graphic for today's game is the road jersey logo of the Boston Red Sox worn off and on throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

His body won't handle it.  Maybe for an entire series like this one or in the playoffs, but he can't go the rest of the season or his foot will act up and he won't be able to hit either.

by NumberSeven on Aug 30, 2007 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Warmups?
How much does pitch count vary how much he throws, though?  Warmup is what, 20 pitches?  So if he throws 10 in an inning vs. 20, he's really thrown 30 vs. 40 which is not as big a difference.  By using him at all you're already made him work in warmups.

King is the most unreliable
among all writers who cover this team and I always take everything he says with a grain of salt.

That said, I think these minor changes is a good thing if it turns out to be true.

I agree with the Joba rules, but I do think it's a waste to give Joba a day off if he throws 10 pitches.

There's a good
quote from Torre, who appears to be debating himself. He says that so far, the Joba rules have worked, so maybe you don't want to mess with success.

That said, I think there's only other reliable guy in the pen (Viz), so come playoff time (or even the deciding games that could come at the end of September), you've got to go with common sense.

Until the first sox game, Joba had thrown the equivalent of one complete game: 122 pitches.

1st + 2nd, no out.  Grounder to Arod, Youk running past went out of the path to avoid the tag, Arod throws to first and gets Drew.  Youk initially called safe, Torre appeals, Youk called out, Francona gets all weepy.

by SP on Aug 30, 2007 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes
The Sox radio announcers agree.  The rule is no more than 3 feet outside the line connecting the bases, he was well outside that.

by SP on Aug 30, 2007 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's the skinny:
  1. Groundball to Alex.
  2. He charges it, and attempts to tag out Youkilis who's running to third right in front of him.
  3. Youkilis avoids the tag by so much that he fully steps on the infield grass.
  4. Alex fires to first for the sure out (he never actually tagged Youkilis).
  5. Umpires have a pow-wow and determine that Youkilis went out of the baseline and call him out.
  6. Francona comes out and argues until he gets tossed.

Not the usual stuff we've seen, throwing mid 90s fastball, with sliders.  Seems like the Sox hitters were staying away from his sinker, and Wang was missing with it.  Hence the walks, but he had enough other good stuff.  How bad could it be when you finish 7 against the Sox with one hit.  Joba in now for the 8th.

For the worker bees...
  1. Pitchout as both Abreu and Rodriguez attempt a double-steal.
  2. Varitek throws to the left of the bag and the ball gets by Lowell.
  3. Abreu scores...and Rodriguez scored all the way from first.  Wowza.

Then again....
the first one to report the "front end" rules was George King -- and we all know how much he's full of BS.

"Front end" meaning that he is supposed to have 2 days off before the throws 2 innings.

by anaconda on Aug 30, 2007 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Does not compute
Why break the rules with a 5 run lead?  If you're going to do it, stretch him in a key situation.

They were the really bad ones
behind the batters head. Those are supposed to be the scariest thing for a batter because when you see a ball coming at you at 98 you instinctively move backwards, but thats where the ball is.

Smart move to bring in Edwar
Posada called his fastball many more times and it put him in against the Bosox. He does throw 91...Good confidence builder. I thought it was dumb to use Joba for the ninth. I say he can pitch Saturday...

by John Amato on Aug 30, 2007 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

One thing to keep in mind
is that the Joba ejection could be costly if the league decides to suspend him a couple of games.

You never know with MLB and the goofy things they do.
