The Boss not doing well

We've been hearing a lot about how The Boss' health has declined in recent years, but nothing I've seen has detailed his regression as much as this article from the NY Post this morning:

"A solitary figure emerges out of the shadows, limping towards us," wearing silk pajamas and a terry-cloth robe, Lidz writes.

"Great to see ya, Tommy," Steinbrenner says to McEwen.

Steinbrenner says "Great to see ya," each time McEwen, 84, asks about the Boss' wife, sons and daughters in separate questions.

Lidz writes that "he looks dreadful."

"His body is bloated; his jawline has slackened into a triple chin; his skin looks as if a dry-cleaner bag has been stretched over it . . . His features seem frozen in a permanent rictus of careworn disbelief."

After snarling at Lidz that the then-struggling Yankees will "come around," Steinbrenner ignores the writer's question about whom he wants to succeed him.

"A few minutes later, Steinbrenner starts repeating himself again. 'Great to see ya, Tommy,' he says in response to every question. 'Great to see ya.' "

Very sad news if there is any truth to this story and would certainly explain why we haven't seen or heard much from The Boss this season.

Not an Expert on This..
..but it seems as though Hal doesn't have the same passion for baseball as the Boss did, which makes me think the rumors about a potential sale are accurate. For all his antics, George has been a great owner who valued winning over everything else. I don't remember him ever cutting corners and he always made clear that the organization's ultimate obligation was to the fans. Needless to say... if someone like Rupert Murdoch bought the team.. the priorities would change.

Ghoulish
I say let George live the rest of his life quietly, it's shame that people have to make fun of him this late in life.

I'm all for debating the worth of his sons, etc. as replacement to the throne, but let's let George face his end with some respect.

right
George was a force to be reckoned with and deserves his due respect. Although I well remember the "Bronx Zoo" days and know he was difficult to deal with, he brought a championship back to NY and has delivered quite a few since.  The whole idea of "buying a championship" was really the willingness to spend money on building the best team in baseball.  And what he has done is as important as what he hasn't done.

What hasn't he done?  He hasn't moved the Yankees out of the Bronx (although he looked for real estate in Manhattan for years).  He hasn't raised ticket prices to the highest in the league (I think those honors go to Boston).  He hasn't allowed some corporate sponsor to come in and rename Yankee Stadium.  He hasn't stopped thinking about Yankee fans.  He always says, "Yankee fans deserve better." when things are not going well.

I hate to think of the Yankees without him...the sons just don't seem as passionate about the team.

I think people should leave George alone.

It will be
a very dark time when George is no longer the owner of the Yankees.  Granted he could have done some things better, but no matter what, it was always for winning/Yankee fans.  I think he is the greatest owner in the history of sports.
