One More Post

I know, I know...  I've turned an nice relaxing offday into a post-fest, but this will be my last one for today.

And don't worry, I won't have this much free time once classes start on Monday.

If you haven't seen the great analysis of Joba and Phil's mechanics up at hardballtimes.com, click the link already!

I'm not sure if that footage of Phil Franchise is from before or after his hamstring injury, but it could explain some of his struggles locating his fastball.  If he's still tentative out there because of his injury Gator needs to work with him on that.

Joba's short followthrough is certainly something I expect him to work on during the offseason.  It's hard to remember that this is only his first year of professional ball.

Moose options?
Can we get rid of Moose? Ask yourself, aren't you the least bit curious if we have an escape clause or plan, whatever out of a guy who is clearly circling the drain? I mean, it's nice to have a pitcher who can beat the heck out of the Royals, maybe the Devil Rays, and an Indians team on the down-swing but...we need better than that!

by DrewSD on Aug 23, 2007 3:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Who would take his place?
I'm not confident in Moose either, but I'm also not at all confident in his possible replacements:  Karstens, Igawa, Clippard -- who else is there?

Kennedy is maxed out on innings, so cross him off.

I put this crazy idea at the bottom of a long thread the other day.  It will never happen, but what the hell...

If Moose gets bombed on Monday, what about taking a flyer on David Wells?   Does he have a month's worth of starts left in his fat tank?

by matthaggs on Aug 23, 2007 3:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

eh...
if wells can't hack it in the NL, how is he going to pitch in a playoff race?

you put moose in the NL and he probably has double-digits wins and an ERA around 4.  i mean, look at what el duque has done with a 82 mph fastball?

by Clutch like Leyritz on Aug 23, 2007 3:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wells
could get wins at Yankee stadium when he's 75.

The dude just turns it on when there's money on the table.

It would be his chance to go out in style.

by matthaggs on Aug 23, 2007 3:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ugh
Please.  I guess he was 76 in his last playoff appearance when he bagged it?

by SP on Aug 23, 2007 3:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's obviously not perfect
But I'd probably trust him with the ball more than Moose at this point.

Yeah, that was a bullshit move in the '03 Series, but what about all the other big games?

by matthaggs on Aug 23, 2007 4:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like the idea
Can't be worse than Moose at this point.

Er
1.59 WHIP, 4.8 K/9 in the NL West.
1.44, 5.7 in the AL East.

At this point, I think we're better off hoping that Moose reverts to the merely bad we saw earlier in the season than taking a shot at Wells.  And that's before we talk about the roster moves we'd have to make to put him on the team.
We're better off giving our own guys a shot.

moose
i really don't see any better alternative to moose (very unfortunately). It will be interesting to see what happens to moose in the playoffs. Presumabely, if Hughes goes into the playoffs strong, he will earn the 4th spot. Let's just hope we dont have to throw moose in the playoffs.

call me crazy
 ok your crazy.
but we were told that there was no way Joba gets called up this year. whadda ya know here he is.
we have also been told there are rules to pitching him. I get it, but maybe just maybe they give him a start or two.
I am not saying they should but what we have been told and what really happens are sometimes two different things.
Also lets not forget about Alan Horne, and Steven White.
I would take either one sight unseen over Igawa.

by beantownbosoxh8er on Aug 23, 2007 4:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Well
Horne is only at AA, but White has been solid in AAA and because of his injury early in the season he's well below his innings cap (at 92 this year after throwing 175 last year).
I expect White, Nieves, Ohlendorf, Bruney, and Alberto Gonzalez to get September callups.
I've given up hope of seeing Chris Britton in the major leagues this year.

No matter how many times you post
that absurd request, it isn't going to happen. Nice try though.

When have
I posted this before?  You must be hanging out with StrappedYankee.  I admit my hatred for Moose is at an all time high, but this isn't something I post all the time.

Perhaps I am mistaken
but I seem to recall you riding the "Moose should just retire" line into the ground. It has been said so much that perhaps I am just attributing them all to you. Either way, I just find it silly to think about. If you were fucking miserable at your job, but were guaranteed to make 11 or 12M just for showing up, who in their right mind would retire?

Yeah, its
not me.  I do hate watching him pitch now though.  Hey, you have something in common with who says Moose should retire all the time.  You have beaten into the ground your hatred for Cashman (or Cashtard as you like to call him)

I've been saying ...
nearly all season that Moose was done ... his last outing confirms to me THAT HE HAS SUNK TO THE DEPTHS OF KEI IGAWA IN SUCKDOM.

Sadly we have no options that I see other than tapping Joba--which isn't going to happen. Again I point to Cashman. Perhaps he could have gotten us an innings eater who could at the very least keep us in games past the second or third batter.

We
don't know that for a fact.

Moose will retire... Moose will retire... Moose will retire.

He is someone
though I can see not want to pitch if he is this bad.  Although 12 mill is probably the clincher to come back.

Too bad
it is too late for Cory Lidle to take him on a site seeing flight over NYC. (Poor taste, I know).

Moos-isms
The best part about being a has-been pitcher with a huge ego (a la Moose)? You dispute balls and strike calls AFTER being pulled from an EIGHTEEN-TO-NINE DEFICIT!! Holy God! The nerve of this guy! It is OBVIOUS he has NOTHING LEFT! Why can't he just say that? "Guys, I just had nothing left. All I have is a 70 mph curveball that doesn't curve and a sub-85 fastball that isn't fast." That's what gets me the most about Mussina, besides his holier-than-thou attitude when teammates struggle or commit error (Arod) or even more than the fact that he stands to make over 20 million over this year and the next.
Oh, and I really have to LAUGH OUT LOUD when people mention getting Wells - I didn't hear too many protests when he did his best to deep-six us in 2003 against Florida in the most important series of all!

Big Ego, Blinds all
Moose's ego is clouding his ability to see that he's got nothing left in the tank. I give him credit though. Next year we'll pay him big bucks to suck as bad as Igawa. Well done.
