Game #124 -- Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees

Detroit Tigers

Curtis Granderson,  CF
Sean Casey,  1B
Gary Sheffield,  DH
Magglio Ordonez,  RF
Carlos Guillen,  SS
Ryan Raburn,  2B
Mike Rabelo,  C
Brandon Inge,  3B
Cameron Maybin,  LF

Jeremy Bonderman,  RHP  (10-5,  4.65)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Melky Cabrera,  CF
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Robinson Cano,  2B
Wilson Betemit,  SS
Andy Phillips,  1B

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (13-6,  4.09)

Wang has excellent career numbers against the Tigers (3-0, 2.52 in 4 starts).  Bonderman has struggled in his career against the Yanks (2-4, 5.05 in 8 starts).

Keep a watchful eye on Bonderman very early in this game.  His ERA in the 1st inning is a robust 13.30 (2.434 WHIP!) and opponents are hitting .389/.455/.741/1.196 against him.  Yikes.

However, his ERA after the 1st inning is a very good 3.07.

The featured graphic for today's game is the road jersey logo of the Detroit Tigers from 1934 to 1951.

we need a very solid performance from wang. he needs to bounce back strong after a few not great outings.

yeah
especially early he's been getting roughed up.  i think he's given up 3 runs in each of his last two starts in the first inning.

its ok billybob
wang will pitch well then farnsworth will pitch a perfect 8th and 9th for a 1-0 win.

you are right
thank god for Farnsworth

by BillyBobisdrunk on Aug 19, 2007 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually....
Farnsworth is unavailable today because he pitched yesterday.

We had the "Farnsworth rules" before we had the "Joba rules."

Which actually works out
Because they can alternate.

Regardless
the fact that we can now give Jeter the day off and have a bat the caliber of Betts is unheard of in the Captain's time in the bigs

Jeter really needed a day off...
especially in light of the upcoming road swing out west. He's been dinged up for quite some time now.

Melky has cooled off a bit
unfortunately, you can't hit .400 forever.

by docgonzo on Aug 19, 2007 1:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope this trend doesn't continue
They've had Bonderman on the ropes twice and blew big chances.

also, joba is available today correct?
joba rule:
one IP, next day off.
two IP, next two days off.
right?

good news
but lately it seems that only double-digit leads are safe against the red sox (until gagne comes in).  im getting really sick of them rallying in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings in every freakin game.

Joba should pitch the 7th
with the heart of the order coming up and I have to believe he'll be out there.

a chance, if he gives up a walk or a hit pull him

ouch
i was going to say that was a poor decision to keep bonderman in at 100+ pitches to face abreu who was 2-2 against him.  i guess that's why im not a manager.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Aug 19, 2007 3:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know Wang is still the "ace"
but this is a really bad move to leave him out there for the 7th inning with the heart of the order coming up.

This is the perfect scenario for Joba.

by anaconda on Aug 19, 2007 3:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree
especially because id love to see what he could do facing sheff and maggs the 2nd time around.

Wang's at 93 pitches
so conceivably he can pitch another inning.  If he makes it, we can have Joba in the 8th, Mo in the 9th, giving Viz the day off.  That would be the ideal situation.

any chance Cashman
blows a gasket and cuts Mo loose and makes this kid the closer to save money for A-rod and Santana?

Interesting
but highly doubtful.  Though I do like the idea of him being a closer once Mo retires.  It's hard to throw 100 mph for 7-8 innings.

by docgonzo on Aug 19, 2007 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
but his stuff is too good to not at least give it a shot.  same thing goes for papelbon, once wake/schilling hang it up, he'll have to be a starter.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Aug 19, 2007 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I highly doubt it as well
I think they would rather see Joba throw 200 IP with that kind of arm instead of 50-60 IP from a closer.

Mo is the closer for two more seasons.  Maybe Humberto Sanchez can recover well and be a dominant arm by the time Mo retires.

Now that we have a 3 run lead
I think we should throw Edwar in the 8th instead of Joba.  We need him in Anaheim.

Just got home
from playing Scrabble in the park, and this is what I like to see.
Here's Edwar in a big spot blowing away the competition.
On the subject of Edwar, take a look at his picture in MLB.com's gameday.  Is that really the best they can do?

Nice start for Edwar
Two strikeouts - anyone know what pitches they were on? I'd imagine his change.

Gotta say, if Edwar can become a stable presence in the 'pen, then we have 3 pretty good arms to get to Rivera.

but all three Ks were on the change.

how bout this revamped bullpen
its great to see joba and edwar in there blowing people away instead of myers and proctor giving me heartburn.

Man, I'm digging this bullpen now. Not actually worried about having to rack up insurance runs.

by PsiFighter37 on Aug 19, 2007 4:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmm
A-Rod's getting plenty of hits lately, but no HRs.

by docgonzo on Aug 19, 2007 4:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not too concerned
I'd rather him get a mix instead of slamming them out all the time. He's still got plenty of time to hit the 50 HR mark for the season. As long as the Yankees make the playoffs, he still is probably the MVP leader as well.

ChiSox losing.....
Well, actually they're not.

Just practicing since they are completely worthless.

Not going to get any easier to make up ground on the BoSox this week because they face TB and ChiSox this week while the Yanks are in LA and DET.

No fair.

Absolutely....
I actually grew up watching the Cubs on WGN because I didn't have cable or a dish before the mid-90s.

I've been a Yankee fan since 1985.  I loved Mattingly and then got attached to the team.

I'm not a Cub "fan," but they are a better organization than the stupid Sox.

I'm with you on that one
I live in LA, so I have to see the boys at god awful Angels Stadium - fans are pathetic and cockroaches infest the concession stands.  Worst place I've ever seen a game.

by docgonzo on Aug 19, 2007 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, they always cause problems
Oh well - we've got to beat them sooner or later. I like the way we're playing right now.

and a good bullpen., Their starters are not very good and now they play  a lot with the A's and Rangers..We need the ANgels to thump them...Heck , look at Arizona...

Maybe
hitting well with RISP, but overall, their hitting isn't that good.

I'm working on
a big "how are they still in this?" post for the next offday.
What I see so far is a brilliant bullpen that has made the most of nearly ever lead.  Their starting pitching is atrocious, and their offense is just ok.  But once they hit the 6th inning with a lead, it's all but over.
This has allowed them to outperform their run differentials all season.
