Deal or No Deal?
From Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman:
- They have several young pitching prospects who could interest Texas
- Along with the Mets, they are about the only contending teams on Gagne's list of 12 to which he can be traded to without his approval...
That bit about the incentives in Gagne's contract makes me think that the Rangers will be all the more willing to move him before he gets too expensive.
Heyman mentions the untouchables: Hughes, Joba, IPK, and -inexplicably- Alan Horne.
Horne does not have the unhittable stuff of the other three. He's put together a 1.25WHIP at AA Trenton with a little over a strikeout an inning. He's a 24 years old righthander with a mid to low 90s fastball.
If you want to see what dominant looks like, check out the trinity's stats- this kid ain't got it.
If I were a betting man, which I'm not, I'd guess that Horne is the guy we'll see moved at the deadline. Heyman mentions Ty Clippard and Jeff Marquez as movable parts, but River Ave Blues reported that Clippard left his Friday start early with a possible injury. I checked, and Clippard has not been put on any sort of DL yet so he could still be traded.
I think we'll see Gagne in pinstripes.
On a side note, Heyman mentions that the Mariner's interest in Kei Igawa seems to have cooled. They must have seen him pitch.
If they were thinking they could unload Richie Sexson on us, I'd rather have Igawa in Scranton than Sexson in the Bronx.

Thanks, jscape....
In return, the Rangers would receive Tyler Clippard and Brett Gardner and at least one more minor leaguer (no name was mentioned).
If there is any truth to this rumor at all, I'll take it.

Alan Horne is a great prospect
24 is still a prospect...25 not so much
Brett Gardner is a 4th outfielder/fringe starter, and Marquez is logjammed in the Yankee system

For the sake of space I won't go through the three levels of A ball or the three levels of rookie ball.
I'd say a strikeout per inning isn't that hard to manage in the minor leagues.
And that WHIP is only good for 13th of 23 on the Trenton list. Stats aren't as big a deal in the minors, but Horne does not belong in the same sentence as Joba or IPK, who put together WHIPS and K/9 of 1.19/14.7 and 0.90/10.6, respectively.
