Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Deal or No Deal?

From Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman:

Here are two important reasons the Yankees may be Texas' best option:
  1. They have several young pitching prospects who could interest Texas
  2. Along with the Mets, they are about the only contending teams on Gagne's list of 12 to which he can be traded to without his approval...
Gagne's contract, which guarantees $6 million for this year, also provides for a potential $5 million in incentives based on games finished. It appears that since the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox would be interested in Gagne to set up their star closers, Gagne's financial situation could be affected unless accommodations were made to satisfy him.

That bit about the incentives in Gagne's contract makes me think that the Rangers will be all the more willing to move him before he gets too expensive.

Heyman mentions the untouchables: Hughes, Joba, IPK, and -inexplicably- Alan Horne.

Horne does not have the unhittable stuff of the other three.  He's put together a 1.25WHIP at AA Trenton with a little over a strikeout an inning.  He's a 24 years old righthander with a mid to low 90s fastball.

If you want to see what dominant looks like, check out the trinity's stats- this kid ain't got it.

If I were a betting man, which I'm not, I'd guess that Horne is the guy we'll see moved at the deadline.  Heyman mentions Ty Clippard and Jeff Marquez as movable parts, but River Ave Blues reported that Clippard left his Friday start early with a possible injury.  I checked, and Clippard has not been put on any sort of DL yet so he could still be traded.

I think we'll see Gagne in pinstripes.

On a side note, Heyman mentions that the Mariner's interest in Kei Igawa seems to have cooled.  They must have seen him pitch.

If they were thinking they could unload Richie Sexson on us, I'd rather have Igawa in Scranton than Sexson in the Bronx.

Thanks, jscape....
I heard a late report last night that a high ranking official in the Rangers organization that said Gagne to the Yanks was a "done deal."

In return, the Rangers would receive Tyler Clippard and Brett Gardner and at least one more minor leaguer (no name was mentioned).

If there is any truth to this rumor at all, I'll take  it.

That would be fantastic
And if that happens, please remove all of my prior posts which in any way lumped Cashman in with Daniels. Brett Gardner projects as a 4th outfielder and we have all seen what Clippard can do. Just imagine him in the launching pad in Arlington. Yikes.

I know
Cleveland's swoon makes my heart think we have a shot, but my head is still skeptical after this three game slide.

Alan Horne is a great prospect
1.25 is a solid WHIP, and how many guys have more than a K an inning

24 is still a prospect...25 not so much

Brett Gardner is a 4th outfielder/fringe starter, and Marquez is logjammed in the Yankee system

For the sake of space I won't go through the three levels of A ball or the three levels of rookie ball.
I'd say a strikeout per inning isn't that hard to manage in the minor leagues.
And that WHIP is only good for 13th of 23 on the Trenton list.  Stats aren't as big a deal in the minors, but Horne does not belong in the same sentence as Joba or IPK, who put together WHIPS and K/9 of 1.19/14.7 and 0.90/10.6, respectively.

There are really three tiers here
Hughes and Joba are Tier I, IPK is Tier II and Horne is down the with the rest. Jscape is right though; Horne doesn't belong anywhere near the discussion of those other three.

I do believe
though that when Meltdown was coming up with Baltimore, he was probably viewed very similar to IPK

Should
we call him "mini-meltdown" or give him the benefit first?

I'm gonna give the guy the benefit.

I disagree
IPK is tier 1B
Horne is Tier 2
