Chamberlain and Kennedy headed to Triple-A Scranton

It appears that both Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy are another step closer to the big leagues while Tyler Clippard and Chase Wright have taken a step back and demoted to Double-A Trenton.

After the game, the Thunder announced pitchers Jaba [sic] Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy were promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with pitchers Tyler Clippard and Chase Wright dropping from S/WB back to the Thunder.

I have this vague memory of fighting with Joba.  As long as other teams don't figure out his secret weakness, he'll do great.

I don't care if he's 500 lbs
if he can gets hitters out in the majors like he has in the minors thus far.

However, it would certainly help if he was a member of the Clemens/Pettitte training program.

I wouldn't have said this a month ago, but I think there is a chance we see him in the Bronx this season.

If nothing else, he can be Clemens' co-caddy after Sept 1st -- along with Hughes, Kennedy, and all the other youngsters.

Joba
Oh, I'm not saying he's too fat, there have been many successful overweight pitchers- see David Wells.  That picture just immediately reminded me of the guy from Mike Tyson's punch out.

The reporter..
...seems to think we're bringing them up for a trade... maybe for Teixeira. Gotta say I think that's a bad idea. Am I right in thinking the only thing that will make this team better is another strong middle reliever (and possibly another starting pitcher but that doesn't seem like a possiblity)?

by BobbyNYC on Jul 24, 2007 9:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anything can happen.....
but I don't think there is any chance these guys will be dealt.

Cash has invested a lot in rebuilding the farm and stockpiling young arms, so I can't see him do a complete 180 and trade his best prospects away.

by anaconda on Jul 24, 2007 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
Those two guys are virtually untouchable. Miggy Cabrera? Maybe, but not for Tex, especially when the Rangers are desperate to unload him.

How about a package
of the guys mentioned in the article: pick two of Alan Horne, Jeff Marquez, Kevin Whelan, Steven Jackson, Jason Jones.  Toss in $3 million to round out the deal.
I might approve that trade.

If only Texas
was the team that employed Brian Cashman and not us. Daniels isn't so retarded as to pick from a team's bargain bin just for the privilege of dumping his slugger. Of those guys mentioned, only Whelan is anything more than mediocre. I would start with Kennedy and see where that got me.

I know you
do not like the job Cashman has done, but saying Daniels is more competent than him is ridiculous.  Daniels couldn't pull the triger on the Beckett deal, he basically gave away Chris Young.

They are both terrible
Neither Cashman nor Daniels is remotely close to competent.

Daniels
is far more an idiot/less competent than Cashman.

Not necessarily disagreeing
They are both terrible and/or incompetent though. It's like choosing burning to death or drowning; you are pretty fucked with either choice.

You're right
the Yankees have been pretty fucked the last ten years.

All the winning is really getting quite tiresome.

by matthaggs on Jul 24, 2007 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They have won a lot
But that is in spite of Cashman, not because of him.

Uh huh
It's kind of amazing you still don't realize what an idiot you sound like when you make statements like those.

by matthaggs on Jul 25, 2007 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am not alone
I guess I am equally amazed at what kind of kool-aid sipping sheep you sound like. To each his own. There are tons of us who are of the opinion that Cashman's "success" is due only to George's checkbook and his ability to mooch off the foundation laid by Stick. It is understood that you disagree.

Fine
but doing things like equating his performance Daniels' performance undermines any rational opinions (like the one expressed above) you may have on the subject.

by matthaggs on Jul 25, 2007 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is a reasonable point
I guess my mistake was not clarifying the Daniels/Cashman thing. I think they are both terrible but will concede that Cashman is not as bad as Daniels.

I'd take...
..drowning.. definitely.. No?

by BobbyNYC on Jul 25, 2007 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree
Alan Horne would be the guy at the top of my list from that group, because he's at a higher level than Whelan and he's a starter with strikeout potential (118K/106IP).  And as you always mention, Whelan is TJ waiting to happen.
Either way, two of those and toss in Scott Proctor.  Something for today, something for tomorrow.
It's very similiar to the deals that moved Beltran to the Astros, David Justice to the Yankees, Knoblauch to the Yankees, and Coco Crisp to the Red Sox.
Plus I think Tex is more movable since his very on-the-record comments:

"Our fans deserve better, and there are a lot of guys in the clubhouse who want better. We've put our heart and soul into this organization, and it's a tough pill to swallow to be at the bottom of the league every year."

I won't give up the farm for this guy, but if we're going to have a quality firstbaseman I think we're gonna have to trade for him either way.  If Texas will deal (and the rest of baseball has heard the same 'he want's to be a Yankee' rumors we have) then his price might not be astronomical.  Even so, it might take Kennedy, and I'd have to think about it.

agreed
he's better by far than any other 1B FA to be..

the Rangers definitely want to move Tex before the deadline, the asking price for him has indeed gone down according to Buster Olney:

I can agree with that
Hell, I would probably dump that whole list of non-prospects for Tex, but a combo of one or two and Proctor works for me too.

Little chance
Unless we move Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy -- either all or in part will peal Tex from Tex. He's a stud, a premiere player, still on the upside of his career. Trying to tempt them with anything less won't get it done. (Even though Texas execs are largely inept--see Young (SD).

Certainly a nice thought that we could package some lesser quaility talent and some green for arguably the best first baseman in the AL. It's simply not going to happen, and I wouldn't move any part of this pinstriped trinity that may one day lead us back to the promised land.

its sounding like
it's not gonna take as much as orginally thought to get tex. they are going to all these teams and asking for their elite prospects and getting the door slam. he wants out, and they want his salary off the books. the longer they wait, the less leveraget they've got.

i think a deal including a guy like kennedy just might be worth exploring.

The deal
Okay so we have Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, and all three to varying degrees are being projected as stud pitchers. For argument sake, let's say two of the three actually amount to anything special. I'm certainly not willing to roll the dice on which two it might be. I think we hold them close.

Tex is a great player, but good bats are easier to find than great arms.

i do agree
i guess you would just have to roll the dice in deciding who to deal... and it wouldn't be worth it, you're right.

Not the _only_ things
but the easiest to obtain.  I will be unhappy with Joba for anybody this side of Santana.  We can start a conversation at Kennedy though.
There combined (AA+A) numbers on the year:
Kennedy (age 22) 111.2 IP 66H 39BB 129K
Joba       (age 21)   79.1 IP 57H 26 BB 115 K
In terms of control and hittability (stuff? how do I say ability to get outs?) they're about the same, but look at the difference in their strikeouts.  I wouldn't mind starting the year with both of them in the rotation next year, but I could understand a deal since this is the class of free agent 1B:
Sean Casey DET
Tony Clark ARZ
Jeff Conine PHI
Julio Franco NYM
Kevin Millar * BAL
Olmedo Saenz LAD
Mark Sweeney SF
Mike Sweeney KC

no way
do i trade Kennedy or Joba.  Andy Phillips is batting .300 (I know it hasen't been long but i think he might be a decent enough for now.)  Giambi has one year left the same as Teixeira. sign him as a free agent and save what is going to be at worst a 4-5 guy in the rotation.  pitching especially good young pitching is hard to find
I didn't know a captain could be as bad as Varitek

by yankeechaser on Jul 24, 2007 2:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think they might think about Kennedy
but they certainly have enough prospects w/o Joba or Kennedy to get Tex...He's  a young power hitting 1B and an excellent fielder...I haven't seen the other prospects to judge...Horne may turn out better than them all, but I have no way of knowing how he throws..
They won't overpay...I hope...

Giambi is kiling us..I doubt he'll ever be totaly healthy again...You put Tex at 3, Arod 4 Matsiu 5, Posada 6 Abreu 7 and so on...that's an incredible lineup...
I'm sick this week so what do I know...I can barely type today..lol

If Minny falls completely out, do you think they would trade Hunter to the Yanks since he's leaving for Melky?

Teach Duncan 1B, and if Phillips stops hitting, there's your man

LET BOBBY ABREU GO AFTER THE SEASON, unless we win a championship, and bring up Brett Gardner

Melky plays every day--Damon has become Dave Roberts

NO HUNTER OR ZAMBRANO!!! NONE!!!

Don't underestimate Cashman
All Abreu's agent has to do is mention to Cashtard that Abreu needs TJ surgery and that option will be picked up.
