Excess players later in the year?

It seems like everyone wants us to trade for a new first baseman or bullpen help.  I don't see much point in this.  First of all are team is good right now. and what are we going to do once are 2 injured first basemen get back, if we get another?  As for the 5th spot in the rotation I see it as Igawa's to have until, Hughes, Raz, and Karstens get back. (although it is Hughes's) I could see karstens good to carry if we have an injury.  Once this happens we will have to many startes ( I could see Raz going back to AAA).  I my opinion the yankees need to make 2 moves, first get rid of farnsworthless, ( bring back tom cat just a hope) and second they could use a backup catcher that can hit above .150, (even Fasano is hitting .178)

I was looking at some sites looks like giambi is out for at least most this season, there are rumblings about henn for drays first basemen pena.  I think cash should pull the trigger on this one and call up britton.
I didn't know a captain could be as bad as Varitek

Are team is good
but our team could use some help.
If we could get a better firstbaseman than Minky while clearing space in the bullpen to call up Britton and Ramirez it would be a plus.
I want a bat for the bench.  I want a backup outfielder who could spell Abreu and Matsui.  I want a backup catcher.
If a starting pitcher came along at a reasonable price I wouldn't turn him away because we'll need a replacement for Clemens and maybe Pettitte next season (and I hold out hope that Moose would retire if he can't figure out how to pitch with his reduced velocity).
The only area of the team I'm really happy with is the bullpen (between MLB and AAA rosters).

Bat for the bench
I just don't understand what's wrong with Josh Phelps for that role. He's the best power bat we've had in a reserve role since Glenallen Hill.

The caveat for all my wants
is 'someone Torre will actually employ in this role'.

What did Phelps do?
He's no Mattingly at first ... In fact, looking at the way Cairo is playing lately, he's not Cairo either. But eventually, Cairo will lose his woody and settle into comfortable mediocrity.

I think Phelps is a decent fix for 2007. Next year we go out and break the bank on someone. What the hell did he do?

Phelps
I think almost getting Jeter maimed on a 3-6-3 attempt in Chicago sealed his fate with Torre.

He should be pinch hitting for Cairo a lot more often, but Torre probably will only do that in games the team is losing, and that (thankfully) hasn't happened very much lately.

Part of the game, isn't it?
I can't imagine Torre is holding that over Phelps head? That's part of the game. One more reason to hope this is Torre's swan song.

Well
If memory serves, I think he played the next night as well and botched what turned out to be an infield single by Thome.  He looked completely lost on the play, and that's probably when Torre decided to pull the plug.  Cairo played the next night.

But I'm with you guys, it should be Phelps out there.

It was more than his play with Jeter.
Before Minky got hurt I told the blog that his defense was too bad, he'd never play in NY.  I think that is right.  He consistently failed to make fairly routine scoops (for a major leaguer). Add poor positioning, reaction and judgement and he was a pretty big liability in the field. Remember that his poor defense cost at least 2 runs in a 2 run loss.  This had to happen. His D was significantly worse than Giambi and his bat no where near as good.

His position on the roster was a minor weakness in a good team.  With this change it is still a minor weakness.  We didn't help ourselves here, but we didn't hurt ourselves either.

Maybe Philips will hit.  The Yank brass seem to think he'll hit.

It cannot possibly have anything
to do with the fact that Cairo has been pretty steady fielding and hitting the ball better.

Agreed
Cairomack only appears to be hitting decent when one views his stats in the context of how terribly low our expectations are of him.

I was talking about Cairo as a
first baseman, Obviously the year-to-date numbers are low, but he has been inching up. I'm sure as well that he will cool down but until he does, Joe intends to ride it out.

The fact is that the team is winning in the current configuration and Joe wants to continue winning so he will keep it that way. When Cairo becomes a liability or when a significant upgrade possibility arrives I imagine that the Yanks will take it.

If the Yanks had an 8 game lead in the division then maybe they would play around with finding an alternative to Cairo but since they need to win every game to stay in this my guess is that they do not want to risk too many games on a guy who can't catch a ball or turn a 3-6-3 and is still a subpar bat.

Since the team is winning of late the best thing is to not make any hasty moves and just see what comes up as the trade deadline approaches.

Not saying that he is a better hitter but
all you can say about Phelps is that he is better than suck.

Since you probably have more experience with hairy asses than I do, I will concede your analogy. But once again, it is a matter of balancing Cairo's sucky bat and decent glove with Phelps's not as sucky bat and atrocious glove.

The most important issue, though, is that the Yanks are on a roll. Until they are no longer on a roll, nothing will change.

Phillips can field the position, the question
is will he be an upgrade at the plate? His numbers in AAA never seem to translate.

If Joe won't use him
what do we gain with him on the roster?

Agreed
They should have kept Phelps. Basak has basically won the "ultimate fan" sweepstakes where he gets to sit in the dugout and travel with the team.
