MLB: Giambi to be suspended next week if he does not cooperate with Mitchell investigation

From USA Today and ESPN Radio:

"Commissioner Bud Selig is heading toward suspending Jason Giambi next week if the New York Yankees slugger does not cooperate with former Sen. George Mitchell's investigation on steroid use, according to a high-ranking Major League Baseball official."

"The official, who talked with Selig but has not been granted permission to speak publicly because of ongoing talks, said Selig wants Giambi's decision by Tuesday."

While I assume this would be overturned through appeal, what kind of nonsense is this?  Bud Selig should be horsewhipped...

After all these months, Mitchell has
got nothing. Since Giambi was the only one dumb enough to open his mouth, Selig is going to latch on to him so that this report does not turn into a laughing stock.

On the bright side, maybe the Yankees can save some payroll while Giambi rehabs. And as long as Cairo continues to bat over .350, who cares what happens to Giambi? (Joke Alert!)

This is all for show
Selig knows he has no chance in hell of getting that suspension to stick

This is a joke.
We all know Jason did roids.  This is nothing new and this suspension will get over turned.

We all
know that this whole investigation is a witch hunt.   Who gives a rats ass what players did years ago,  all that matters is how MLB handles the whole situation in the years to come.  P.S.  Selig is a moron and should be kicked out of the commissioners chair.  He makes absolutely no point by suspending Giambi.

by yanksfan77 on Jun 14, 2007 7:23 AM EDT reply actions

selig
the very fact that selig thinks he has any kind of moral authority on steroids makes me laugh.  it's his fault we've got this situation on our hands in the first place, since he stood by and let it happen.  a guy finally decides to be somewhat forthright, and he gets punished for it.  typical.

buster olney was right about this: MLB should just declare amnesty from this point back, then go zero-tolerance from this point forward.  that's the only way to eradicate this problem and get the focus back on the field.

Selig should be the first in line
to drink the purple poison. He's guilty by association, and we all know it. Sure Giambi should have kept his pie hole shut, but when the commissioner advocates 'roids, and allows the Sosa's, Macs, and scores of others to roid up to save the game he needs to come clean.

Selig reminds me of the kid in school who instigates some chaos and then steps away and lets everyone else get nabbed. I regularly beat the crap outta' kids like that.

Bring on Selig.

It seems
to me that he stayed mum on the whole issue.  Because the whole home run race between sosa and mac was good for business.  People were going to games and spending money on merchandise.  If you have a revenue boost like that you might have ignored the bigger problem as well.

That time in MLB history, people lost alot of interest in the game.  So why would he want to stop people from coming to the parks.  Let em do steroids he thinks ,the game will gain popularity and everyone will make money.  I am not saying that I agree with Selig on anything, I think the guy is a moron.  But he is the one to blame for letting it go on for as long as it did.  And he wants to be the one who made baseball popular again, so he is trying to go back and clean up his own mess.

Which isn't going to work.  Everyone knows he did nothing about roids for years.  Yes the players are to blame, however Selig played dumb and did nothing.  And looks even more dumb by going on his little witch hunt for steroid users he most likely knew about back then.  How do we get this guy canned and who is the future commish going to be?

Ugh
People have been talking about George Bush being next commissioner.  I don't know if I can keep watching baseball if that happens.  The Yankees will probably invade Cuba or something.

I've been to Cuba
It's beautiful, and if I could get to go to a baseball game there I'd support a Yankee invasion.

The odds of me dating Jessica Alba
are better than the odds of George Bush becoming MLB Commissioner.

That may be the most absurd rumor I've ever heard.

Funny thing ...
I was in Hawaii back in March, and Jessica Alba was staying at the hotel/resort I was at. I signed up for one of those water tours where you jet ski, snorkle along the shoreline and through caves. She was actually my partner!

The whole time I'm with her (and she is smokin' hot) I'm thinking I've got a shot. I mean, I'm a decent looking guy (6-2, 220), I even found myself plotting ways to dump my wife if Jess (that's what she insisted I call her) suddenly gave me the signal.

Alas, it was a fun afternoon ... but I'm back with my wife, and Jessica is a celluloid dream.

You must've really been around the block
because you seem to have a good story awaiting for just about everything.

Kudos.

With all due respect to the Captain, Alba is the hottest Jessica in Hollywood.

Lived alot ... and got lucky
It's uncanny, really. I seem to have a knack of being in the right place. As for Jessica. Hands down smokin' hot, and she was actually very nice. If I could figure out how to post a pic, I'd send one of me with her on jet skis.

Funny, but I sincerely thought I had a shot. Whadda' moron.

What Minor League
team did you play for and what kind of injury did you have.  If you don't mind me asking?

Sure
I was in the Cardinal organization, as a left-handed pitcher. I suffered an off-the-field accident that required reconstructive left wrist surgery to reattach tendons, etc.

When you are in the minors, you are a piece of meat. I was released following the injury.

if he opens his mouth and spills the beans, his career will be over.  As Relaunch already said, we all know he's done it.

Baseball needs a Chelios
If you don't remember Chris Chelios (hockey player) physically threatened his commish once.

That's exactly what Selig needs a good ass kicking. Giambi should say "You want to know what steroids did to my muscles? Come over here and I'll show you first hand."

If a man ran MLB he'd give amnesty to all abuser pre-2003 and instill highly regimented system to catch all forms of cheating in MLB from now on.

by collink on Jun 14, 2007 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

JEEBUS!!
Giambi deserves whatever he gets, even Steinbrenner and Cashman would agre with taht. Are you people aware of the fact that you're advocating physical violence against the Commissioner of Baseball because he dared to say something against a player on your team??? Makes me wonder how many of you are on steroids too.

Also, I keep reading pseudo-macho loudmouths defending Giambi, yet the poll here on the site shows that the vast majority of those polled think the Yanks are better without him. Does it occur to any of you brilliant sports minds that all your blustering, insulting, bullying and threatening have not helped your position become the most popular one? You call people stupid for stating that the Yanks are better off without Giambroid, yet you're in the minority opinion here on this very site. In other words, you are calling the (silent) majority of people who visit here stupid because they're not afraid to admit the obvious.

You live in a state of denial and you get really cranky when people point that out to you.

Now threaten to "body-slam" me and convince even more people that you're ignorant boobs.

Great post, moron.
You do understand people here aren't ripping Selig because of his stance on steroids now.  Its because Selig did nothing in 98 (Mac and Sosa) and benefited from them.

What will he get by Giambi here, NOTHING!  Everyone knows he did roids, he admitted to doing roids.  If anything, Selig/Mitchell should spend their time on trying to find other people.

This investigation so far has cost almost $30 million. You are telling me for $30 million they have found out Giambi did steroids.  Thats awesome.

By the way, you are a moron.

Oh, no doubt
But this is a glaring error. I can't tell if he's doing this because he think it will appease the public, or if he's looking for some personal glory.

Either way, it's not the right decision.

due to the long ball
which was due to steroids. A lot of MLBs increasing popularity came from steroids let's be honest here.

Also Bud has benefitted from a lot the work that individual teams have done, I'm thinking of a particular team but can't remember their name.

If the Yankees and Red Sox weren't so well run during the last decade plus the MLB would be looking bad right now.

I can't stand stand Bud ...
but you know the owners will just bring in another lackey to replace him.  The last true commish of baseball was Giammati ... perhaps Vincent.  Don't have enough info on him yet.
