Torre: Surgery possible for Pavano

In case nobody saw this...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees manager Joe Torre raised the possibility that Carl Pavano would need surgery, and general manager Brian Cashman admitted the oft-injured pitcher has been a bust with New York since signing a $39.95 million, four-year contract.

"It clearly hasn't worked out. There's no doubt about that," Cashman said Friday. "We signed a player that we expected to be a horse in our rotation and it hasn't worked out. He physically hasn't held up. Period."

Boy Cashman
sure has been quoted a lot lately about how much he has fucked up. Wonder why that is?

When I saw
"Torre: Surgery Possible" I got excited. A little knee replacement might keep him from so many trips to the mound!

What a let down.

I thought you had
to pitch to get injured
Great Success!

Worst contract ever?
Is this the worst contract in the history of baseball?  Is there any other player who's gotten so much money for such a long period and been unable to do anything useful for such a large percentage of that time?
Projections of Igawa's future don't count.

Probably,
the Mike Hamptom deal is pretty bad also but at least he pitched 2 or 3 years of his contract.

Darren Dreifort and Chan Ho Park
also come to mind, but I agree that Hampton's is the worst. Couple that with the Helton deal and Colorado has given out two of the worst in the history of the sport. For me, the Pavano deal doesn't crack the top of the list just because the Yankees can afford to erase their mistakes with cash. In my opinion, to be one of the worst ever you have to overpay in such a manner as to cripple your franchise going forward and Pavano's deal really didn't do that.

Performance, not injuries
Even barring the injuries, there was not reason to expect him to be good.  Before his career year at 18-8, he had a losing record and an ERA in the high 4s.  At best he would have been another Vazquez or Weaver.

Colorado
Don't forget the Neagle deal.

Pavano is actually pretty good
Pavano is actually a good pitcher and I can't wait to see what he looks like after hes ready to jump back on the mound!

Were you watching in April?
I was. I was not impressed.

i was watching in april!
I meant for the pitching staff in whole for the Yanks he was a pitcher who would have probably have been in just as much as any one of them. We all have to remember that the Yanks pitching SUCKS! I'll tell you he still isn't my favorite.

Then
WHAT THE FUCK?!! And then you realise that anybody who went to college would never say anything that stupid in public. And as soon as you have that thought, your eyes close and the next morning they find you dead in your bathroom.

Probably
have seen the last of his sorry ass in a Yankee uniform. This surgery will keep him out 12-16 months. Word is he was determined to have it whether he needed it or not. He realized he couldn't handle New York early on and decided to phone in his entire contract, keeping the money, of course. I find this story very credible in light of the events of the last 3 seasons.

I can't believe that
but I can believe he's got some mental issues that are more serious than his physical ones. What I would like to know is, what are the Yankees holding on for? Why not release him? Any time the training and coaching staff spends with him at this point is more money wasted.

Unless there is a union rule or something (for releasing players on the DL), maybe Pavano's spot on the 40 goes to Roger.

Possibly
There is for trading:
"Injured players may not be traded without permission of the Commissioner nor may they be optioned to the minors, though they may be assigned to a minor league club for rehabilitation for a limited amount of time (30 days for pitchers, 20 for non-pitchers)."
Releasing might have something similar, since a release seems worse than being optioned.  Either way they have to pay his salary, so if they just said, "You're never pitching again," I'm sure he'd be happy to take his check and go home to his sports cars.

Lemon Law for Pavano?
Given the fact that the bastard didn't pitch much, was constantly hurt ... blah, blah, blah...
Can't the Yankees file an insurance claim on him and get back some of his contract.

My dad used the Lemon Law to bring back a Ford.
Can't we do that for Pavano?
