Clemens in Scranton

Currently on ESPN and ESPNNews. He looks much sharper tonight. 1 hit through 2 innings. Much better control than he showed in Trenton. I am glad he gets another minor league stint. Scranton Stadium looks nice with the grass too.

ESPN/News is just showing the top of the innings. If you want to watch the whole thing it is on MLB.com.

I guess he goes Monday
against Chicago. Will it  even matter by then?

Yes

He is on schedule for
Saturday, but won't pitch until Monday.  So the Yanks have DeSalvo/Clippard lined up for Boston and not Clemens?

I believe
They have Wang, Pettitte and Moose lined up for Boston, which is why they're not inserting Clemens.

That means
Wang and Pettitte will leave their respective games, only to have the bullpen blow the lead, followed by a typical Moose Meltdown(TM) in game three, leading to a sweep in Boston and the last remnants of hope being squashed underfoot.  Can't wait!

I didn't realize that
Might as well not play the games, then.

Yanks are 2-9
in one run games.  I'm not saying that's going to even out, but we're not going to keep playing this badly.  The pitching and the hitting are going to sync up and we'll make a charge.
Giving up is for Cubs fans.

I think this team is good enough
to win two out of three.  We did that for a long stretch last season (never put together a long streak, just played consistent).
If they start tonight they'll finish with 98 wins.  There's still a lot of season left.

I'm looking
to upgrade at second more than at first.

Ick, why?
Upgrading at 2nd is going to be much harder than at 1st. Cano may not be hitting well, but at least he provides good defense. If this team needs an offensive shot in the arm, the easiest place to find that is at 1B or DH, not 2B.

by Willton on May 29, 2007 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus
Cano has a track record. We know what he's capable of. Not saying he'll perform to those standards, but we know that he can.

Neither Mink nor Phelps have that kind of track record (which says a lot, considering this is only Robbie's third year).

I'm looking at second
because I'm sure Cano has more value on the block than Minky or Phelps.
If money is all equal, I think moving Cano or Melky is easier than moving one of the 1Bs.  Of course, we should release Phelps if we're not going to play him.  Cano's great season last year was largely luck (a great BA on balls in play).  But we might be able to turn that track record into something worth having.
As bad as Minky's .683 OPS is, Cano's .662 is worse.
I agree that the team needs a shot in the arm, and if I were going to make a move I think I'd go after a Ray Durham or Mark DeRosa over a Todd Helton or Dmitri Young.

Cano's BABIP
A high line drive percentage and one of the highest groundball percentages in the league led to that number being so high.

I understand that Cano's BABIP
are somewhat repeatable.  But a .290/.320/.500 line are my optomistic projections for him.  So when I look at who we could move for a player who won't be a big-dollar long-term commitment, it's 2B I come back to.

I know Cano
has started slow, but I think trading him now makes absolute no sense.  They should trade older players, not any of their under 25 bunch

I'm no fair weather fan
I'm expressing my frustration with an immensely disappointing season - we should be much better than we are.

by docgonzo on May 29, 2007 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

And that's the point of my sarcastic post
I remember the 80s well - they sucked, but it was expected, as you said.  With the talent the Yankees have now, we should be near or at the top.  But we're not and it's incredibly frustrating to watch, especially when some players (Abreu and Cano specifically) look like they're not trying - it's beyond slumping with those two; their heads aren't in the game.  Torre has been the biggest disappointment.  I'm not in favor of firing him right now - that's a distraction the team doesn't need - but he needs to do something to spark a fire under their asses.  In '05, he had a meeting and actually yelled at the team when they were 11-19 - something he's rarely, if ever done. And it worked.  I don't know what he did in his closed door meeting yesterday, but it's obvious it didn't have any effect - not yet at least.

Sorry to drone on like this, but I've seen the good, bad and ugly with this team for over 20 years - but this year has, in my opinion, been the one of the worst.  I tend to be sarcastic when frustrated, so don't take it the wrong way.

Being realistic
doesn't mean someone is not a fan.  Just because everyone doesn't give the "go team" message, it doesn't mean they don't care and want the Yanks to win.

Rocket's Reenty
I'd love to see Torre hand him the ball in Boston this weekend, if Roger is ready. Imagine the psychological upside if he pitched well and the Yankees won.
