Yankees show interest in Helton

Multiple scouts said Wednesday the New York Yankees are interested in Rockies first baseman Todd Helton and closer Brian Fuentes, though nothing is brewing.

If the Rockies don't rebound, many teams will be calling to see if they want to unload salaries. Helton has rebounded nicely this season to rank second in the big leagues in on-base percentage and first with 21 multihit games.

Yeah,
we talked about it on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I'm neutral on whether or not he'd help, and I'd want the Rockies to pick up some of his salary.
If they made a move I wouldn't scream, but I'd be focused on other upgrades (relief pitching, catcher, a 3B prospect).

if...
it wasnt for his huge contract id say "sure!" because i think hed be great for this year and maybe next. But the last thing the yanks need is another overpaid player getting older and more prone to injuries.

I disagree
Giambi has been a productive for his contract.  Even the steroid controversy does not make me think it was a bad signing.  I hate him as a player, but he wasn't a bad signing

Helton is 33.  He'll turn 34 during the season.  No reason he couldn't have 4 or 5 good seasons.  He is not a Giambi type power guy but his OBP makes him attractive.

Wow
I am really not sure which half of that post was more ridiculous. Both contentions are downright absurd.

Helton - a product of thin air?
Helton's got $85 million left on his contract. Look at his power numbers once they started storing the baseballs in humidifiers at Coors Field. They have dropped considerably. If you are going to spend that amount on a 15-20 homer/yr. player, save the money now and go after Ichiro in the winter.

Nice idea, but ...
I'd love to have Helton at firstbase as opposed to Minky, Giambi, Cairo, or Phelps (why not throw Gehrig into the mix), but not for that price tag.

If we're angling for a firstbaseman, my vote would be Teixeira, who's notably younger and has more upside than Helton.

Teixiera
isn't going anywhere.

disagree
He's an east coast guy who has stated a number of times (and probably with the prompting of his agent) that he grew up idolizing Don Mattingly. The chance to play for Donnie Baseball would be extremely tempting to a guy like Tex.

I wouldn't be so sure he doesn't bolt for the bright lights of NYC when his contract is up.

Be prepared to give up Hughes

Wouldn't give up nuthn'
He's a free agent after next season. I certainly wouldn't give up Hughes, but a nifty combo of far lesser talent might work--afterall, this is the Texas Rangers.
