POLL For Skip

POLL for the Yankees Skipper. Decide what is best for the Yankees. The dilema is what to do that is best for this installment of the Yankees. This team appears to do little right.  They look like they are going through the motions. Passion is lacking. Bad signings are not just a fluke but a frequent occurence. Is the team badly misconceived or is it leadership? What can be done.    Let's start with the leadership first who run the team on a day to day basis. The poll is to get the feel for what us fans think about Torre.

Poll
Should Torre be fired?
No. Fire Cashman instead. Bad personal decisions.

Hmmm
You conflute Torre and Cashmen nicely.  But there's no option for "at the end of the season" which is what I would vote on both of them (pending results of the next 118 games).
If Torre gets fired midseason I'll be disappointed but not broken hearted, but if we get a guy who makes just as stupid gritty baseball guy in-game decisions while mishandling the clubhosue don't say I didn't warn you.
If Cashman gets fired midseason I'll be horrified, because that's not fair to his successor and could undermine what good he's done in the last couple of years.

Love it
I agree totally. Of course, Torre just won his 1,100 game so all the St. Joe fans are gonna weep and vote for him to stay. So its going to be a long opera through the season, as its always on this fishbowl we call Yankee Stadium.

Hey

Lets play Billy Ball!

About fucking time too.
Now I have this law review write-on competition that is taking away from my baseball and computer game time. I was at the stadium last night and I still couldn't get Constitutional issues about free speech out of my head.

Where'd ya sit? I was stuck up in Tier 13, the alcomohol-free section (but hey, they were free tickets).

I will really envy you if you sat in the upper deck by right field. Shit was going down up there.

In fact, I was: Tier 27
And by no means would I envy someone who had to deal with the douchebags that were egging on the disruptive crowd. My girlfriend and I were thinking that at some point the chants of "ASS-HOLE" were actually instigating problems, not recognizing them. Some guys next to me were then just looking to eject Boston fans who weren't even doing anything. I have no problem jeering Boston fans as long as it is in good fun. What was going on up there was spiteful jackassery. Why can't we just watch the game?

by Willton on May 24, 2007 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

More reason
why I have no problem with limiting the availability of alcohol at ballparks. Most of the disruptive behavior comes from fans who've had a few.

Did that chick flash the crowd?
We saw her being taken out, and had to assume that.

I do understand your resentment, though. I wouldn't want to be caught in the crossfire of flying beers. I hope neither of you got hit with one.

I saw no flashing
and I imagine if she had she would not have had the many "ASS-HOLE" chants going her way.

By the way, there were a number of women-fans that got tossed for acting retarded. Most of the girls that got tossed were for yelling back at the jeering crowd and waving and what-not.

I remember one couple distinctly: the girl was being belligerant, and the guy, who I can only assume was her boyfriend, actually saw what was happening and actually headed towards the gate unfettered, ahead of his resisting girlfriend. I found that rather entertaining. It's like the guy just knew that his girl was going to get them thrown out, so he got a head start.

It prevents you from blowing $8 on a beer (or $10, because the Heineken booth is right next to the section). I just wish I knew that before I bought beer.

If I'm spending more the 3 bucks on a beer it'd better be something thick.  Arrogant Bastard, Dead Guy's Ale, even Guinness.

See my latest entry
you will note that championship teams RUN.

by StrappedYankee on May 25, 2007 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Which ones?
Do you mean the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, who had a grand total of 59 steals in the regular season, ranking 14 of 16 in the NL in that category? Or were you talking about their opponents, the Detroit Tigers, who had 60 steals that season?

Or how about the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who had 68 steals that season? I guess it must have really hurt them when they didn't steal one base in the WS. (I'm sorry to bring it up again, but it's to prove a point.)

What I've noticed as of late is that the teams that run the most tend to be the teams that can't hit. What you fail to notice is that the Yankees are actually quite a good scoring team (currently 4th in the AL with 250 runs scored), and part of the reason that they score so much is because they don't take risks on the basepaths. They have good enough hitters to continue hit-parades and put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard. So I'm not sure why you're complaining about the offense, other than the fact that it might not be asthetically pleasing to you. The reason this team is floundering right now is because of the pitching, and no amount of baserunning is going to change that.

It's time to get caught up with the times, my friend. This isn't little league; this isn't college, and this isn't 1985. Teams score runs by swinging the bat. You can gain on the margins by one-run strategies, but you can't make an average team good that way.

(Disclaimer: I'm not calling the Yankees average.)

by Willton on May 27, 2007 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

While I agree the
idea of small ball is dumb, the Yanks being 4th in runs scored is misleading also.  It seems that they either score alot of runs in one game, then have episodes like last night.
Great Success!

by ReLaunch on May 27, 2007 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, so?
They aren't going to score more than 5 runs every game. It's just like how they may give up many runs some games and pitch shutouts other games. Just because they have a number of blowouts and a few low scoring outings does not diminish their ability to score runs better than most teams in the league. Hell, the reason that the Yanks don't have a worse record than they do now has to do with their ability to score runs.

by Willton on May 27, 2007 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

On average,
when a team has more RS than RA, they would have a better record than .500.  The Yanks being 4th in the league is misleading, that is my point.  I agree about your other points.  I hate watching this team.

Torre
has made his fair share of idiotic moves, but to be honest, the spotlight is only on him because of the atrocious pitching Cash has provided for him thus far. I, by no means, think Torre's a "great" manager, but managing is such a minimal aspect of the game when compared to pitching and hitting, that this whole issue isn't too important to me.

Torre's adequate given the hitting talent we have and given the way the pitching is coming together. Mattingly is an intriguing option, but were I to promote him, I'd give him a clean slate with which to manage (ie, not in the middle of a season).

Back, to the wall, ssseeeya! And a home run for... ... ... ... ... Bubba Crosby!
