A-Rod: Our worst case scenario

I know this subject has been beat to death so far this season, but I had a friend put a whole new spin on it for me this weekend.  The subject is the A-Rod opt out stuff...here is the scenario.

Facts:

  1.  A-Rod is one of the best players of all time and is on pace to break the HR record and several other records.
  2.  He will get more guaranteed money at age 31 than he will at age 34 which makes it increasingly likely he will opt out.
  3.  The Yanks can extend him and still get him for 16 Million for the next 3 years which should be illegal when Zito just got 18 Million.
Now, we have all seen how he has started out the season - white hot and he is even fielding the ball well.  But what if, What If, WHAT IF.....he won the Series with the Yanks this year (got his ring), opted out to become a free agent in a market where the #2 FA at 3B is Lowell, the Yanks do not extend his contract and lose in a bidding war, and he goes to another team in the AL East that
  1. can afford him
  2. had him in a trade before it was nixed by MLB
  3. has an opening at 3B
  4. could provide loving fans
  5. where he can break it off in every Yankee fan that booed him.
Even if we signed a STUD SP, if we let A-Rod walk,  he will be impossible to replace and could be a thorn in our side for years to come.  If would be a reverse Damon in that they get better and we get worse...a lot worse.

I think we need to bend Cashman's rules a little and add 3-4 more years onto his deal.  Then we still get him at a deal for 3 more years and keep him off of the FA market.

Thoughts?

Extend him now
They should absolutely extend him now and take the opt-out off the table. Even if he doesn't go to Boston, A-Rod's depature would be a huge swing in the balance of power in the AL East. You simply don't replace the best player in the game.

Could not agree more
and I could care less about what that does to Posada and Mo's contract situation.  If Alex walks, we are blued, screwed, and tatooed!

Given 'em a raise
I frankly thought he would wilt under the increased pressure from Yankees fans who hated Arod. I couldn't be more wrong. He's been a monster--a bright spot thus far.

I agree with Pfister... sign him now, or have him come back and haunt us later.

AROD
said he isn't talking contract until after the season. He said he wants to stay, but if the fans and management don't want him then he'll leave. I wonder if he'll stay true to his word with Boras as his agent. He doesn't need any more money...if the Yanks win, he'll never be treated better by any fan base, but if he has a dynamite season and goes 1-15 again...he's gone I would think...But he looks like a different player now. Better than before...

You can't figure it out
He doesn't need more money, but he could make more money.
But he's had money on a losing team.  If he wants to win he'll stay in NY.
I know what I would do.
I know what Scott Boras would do.
I don't think any of us can tell what Alex will do.
We're reaching the point where you can either be a truly dedicated, state-of-the-art fan or you can have a life. Take your pick.

Just sit back and enjoy
It looks like Alex is playing with a motivation to prove all his critics wrong, the Yankees extending him right now may take away some of this new motivation.

Alex is only going to leave if wants to get out of NY, and it seems he will not make up his mind about that until after the season. Nothing the Yankees front office does can really make him stay in NY if he wants to leave.

Let's just enjoy Alex's baseball skill right now. In fact the more the Yankee fans just sit back and enjoy Alex it's probably more likely that he'll stay.

Let's see if he can keep this up...
Remember Alex is Mr. May.  We won't be talking like this when he is batting .087 in October.

And what's with all the bloody noses lately?

Cocaine...
Apparently too much coke can cause frequent bloody noses. Given the unbelieveable start AROD is having, I'm wondering if he's been using the blow...

If this is true, I wish he'd give some to Proctor, Farnsworth, Igawa, and give enough to OD Pavano... That was mean.
