Kei Igawa

Igawa had a kind of a rough outing yesterday in his start against the Braves.

To Kelly Johnson

Walked him on 5 pitches. The one strike was a uncomfortably high slider that I thought belonged over the center field wall.

To Edgar Rentaria

He was trying to pitch Rentaria inside because he is so good at hitting the ball the other way. Unfortunately he missed inside with two straight fastballs, and then deposited two balls in the dirt in front of Jorge to walk Rentaria on 4 pitches.

WALK

(At this point he has pitched one strike)

To Chipper Jones

He gave Chipper Jones another first pitch ball, missing high and outside. The next pitch was a strike but it looked to be another high slider, that I think Chipper would have swung at if he wasn't so surprised that Igawa actually threw a strike. He took a fastball right in the middle of the strikezone, followed by ANOTHER high slider for strike three.

To Andrew Jones

Started it off by giving him with two balls. Fastball right down the middle taken for a strike. Swing and a miss, strike two.
curveball in the dirt, Jones can't check his swing.

To Craig Wilson

Fastball for a strike
Swinging strike, breaking ball in the dirt
Wilson strikes out on ANOTHER breaking ball in the dirt.

Finished first inning, He walked the the leadoff batter and then second batter, and then struck out the next three. The look on Jones face was priceless, "Did he just throw a strike?" He doesn't ever seem to throw that curve of his for a strike, so I don't know how long he is going to be able to use it.

You guys get the idea. His strikeout numbers were high, but I don't know how. He wasn't making quality pitches, and he started off very rough not being able to find the strikezone. I am not going to go through pitch by pitch, but he walked another batter and got an extra strikeout, but was saved from giving up an extra base hit by Melky who made a diving/rolling/I don't even know catch.

He's not a BLOWER...
Okay, the good. He must have some hellacious movement on his pitches--especially his fastball and curve. Now the bad. He didn't throw one pitch over 91 mph, and his control was erratic. Overlooking the control yips, he consistantly missed up in the zone. This is bad if you aren't as Cash-man refers to as a BLOWER. Prediction: He will strikeout a few guys--especially early in the season. He might even enjoy some early success, but the second time through Boston, Toronto, etc. he's going to get killed.

I have no faith
Ronster said it well. Usually, spring training stats don't mean jack but his erratic location and mediocre velocity are alarming.

I thought we traded Jaret Wright
That reads like a Jaret Wright outing.

Don't mention that name
Unfortunately, I think you may be "wright". The Jaret Wright signing was a horrible miscue, only to be duplicated by the Igawa signing, I fear.

Cashman
Signed Pavano too. Hell of a hat trick.

I'm guilty
I almost hate to confess this, but initially I thought the Pavano signing would be a good thing--especially given the fact that he's a Long Island boy. I figured he'd thrive being back home. I was wrong.

Me too,
I thought it was good at the time.  Its easy to criticize moves in retrospect.  The Wright and Igawa signings do make me question though.
Great Success!

Bruce Chen II
Is my personal choice. Blower-san is also nice.

I thought about that
He's definitely more Kaz Ishii II than Bruce Chen II.
River Ave. Blues
Yankees and their minor leagues. My last blogging stop, I promise.
