Matsui

The Toronto Sun and NY Post are reporting that the Giants and Yankees have discussed Hideki Matsui.  This is probably very early on and his full no-trade clause should complicate matters, but it is interesting nonetheless.

I am really interested to see who the Giants would be willing to part with for Matsui.  I have a proposal in my mind, but I'll save it until I feel like embarrassing myself.

Update [2007-12-6 17:26:22 by marcbouch9]: 3:45 p.m., from Jayson Stark • A source says the Giants did call the Yankees about Hideki Matsui. They're offering their starting pitchers (Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain or Noah Lowry) for bats, but they are just exploring to see if there is a match. Matsui has a full no-trade clause, and it isn't known whether he would waive it to go to San Francisco or anywhere else.

Update [2007-12-13 19:36:00 by marcbouch9]:Sources report that the signing of Rowand may mean that the Giants are out of the OF bat market. Not sure why. They're not good at baseball. But, the White Sox are reportedly still in the market for an OF bat and may dangle Paul Konerko to get one. My question is: what do you think of Konerko at an extra year at $1M less per year for Matsui? We need another RHB and a 1B. He is both. But, that may take us out of the Teixeira sweepstakes next year. Your thoughts?

thats reasonable
maybe even kennedy, matsui and horne for cain and linecum? haha that would be awesome

I said it was embarrassing
Once I thought about getting Lincecum, I thought of flipping him in a deal for Teixeira.  I have been diagnosed with Hot Stove Fever.

My take on Lowery: not great numbers in a pitcher's park.  Buyer beware.

If anything
I think Matsui and Kennedy is overpaying for just Lincecum.  No need to include Kennedy unless we're getting Cain or Lincecum back.

How about Cain and Sanchez for Matsui and Kennedy?  Failing that, how about Matsui for Brian Wilson?  It'll lead to an endless stream of Michael Kay puns (Wilson gives Yankees good vibrations?), but it'll be worth it if he can keep his 6H/9IP and 2.6:1 K:BB ratio.

I don't know
Lincecum is pretty incredible.    Cain and Sanchez would work.

I think we could do better than Wilson for Matsui.

Devil's advocate
Our 35-year old fourth outfielder with a bad knee, little range, and a no trade clause?

OK, Keanu
San Francisco has a massive void in LF, no legit power threat at any position, and the need for any type of "star" to fill the same LF void left by Barry Bonds.  Matsui can solve those problems.

SF has a huge Asian population (30% of 750K+ people), is getting a arguable bargain with Matsui at $26M over the next two years, as he was more productive than Carl Crawford, Travis Hafner, Justin Morneau and Barry Bonds last season.  Kennedy is a major-league ready pitcher who has performed consistently great at every level.

How's that?

race card!
30% asian is about right but, 20% is actually chinese. 1.47% japanese in san fran.

I know
and that is why I limited it to "Asian" for the sell!  Seriously, though, the Giants need something to make people come to the park with Bonds gone.

Abraham
floated the idea of Matsui/Prospect for Noah Lowry, whose numbers aren't that stellar in the NL - 4.03 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, .259 OBA.  They'll only get worse in  the AL East.

Oh God, No!
Lowry is a soft-tosser, and I can hear Cashman during the press conference already:

BC: Thank you everyone. Suzy, here's a crying towel. I know you Hideki were close.
SW: (muffled weeping and gnashing of teeth)
BC: At this time I would like to announce the newest member of the Yankees family, Noah Lowry.
Before we take any questions, let me just say he passed his physical, and did break 64mph on the JUGS gun at the stadium.
Bergen Record: So it's safe to assume he's not a blower?
BC: Oh, God, yes. I throw harder. However, it's important to know that it's all about placement and movement.

Muffled gunshot rings out ... moments later Pfisty is taken into custody. Just before being placed in the cruiser, Pfisty is heard saying "I exercised my demon--that short little, balding bastard with the Napolean complex. I can die a happy man.

Interesting thought
ESPN is reporting that 5-7 teams are interested in Alexei Ramirez - we all know that the Yankees are one of those teams.  Word is he can play second or some outfield position.  Moving Matsui to SF for pitching might be a good proposition if we can land this guy, provided he's all that, something I have no clue about.  Anyone have numbers on him?

by docgonzo on Dec 6, 2007 3:10 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lincecum
or Cain is a pipe-dream.

Cashman probably won't trade away Kennedy just to get back a 22 year old pitcher.

I propose a 3-way deal: Yankees, Giants, Reds

Yankees:

Give up Matsui + cash + one of White/Marquez

Get 1B Joey Votto from Reds

Giants:

Give up one of Lowry/Sanchez + Hennesey

Get Matsui + Cash

Reds:

Give up Joey Votto.

Get Lowry/Sanchez + White/Marquez (maybe both?)

--

Fills the Yanks' 1B hole, gives Reds starters for their rotation/pen, and the Giants get a middle order bat.

The Giants probably can't pry away Bruce/Votto/Encarnacion without giving up Cain/Lincecum.

The Yankees can't pry away Votto without giving up one of the big three.

But in a 3-way deal, everyone gets what they want.  The Reds might want a bit more but... whatever.  They have a logjam at 1B/OF.

Matsui Trade
I do not understand a proposal of Matsui + Kennedy for Lincecum. Matsui had bad knees last year, but he still had around 25HR/100 RBIs. Last time I looked, I did not find many LFs with this kind of production. Matsui will have this kind of production wherever he goes. SF must fill a hold left by Bonds, so they might overpay a little. I contend that there is no reason to include IPK on this. I would say Matsui + Marquez might get this deal done. I am not sure Matsui will approve this deal though. Anyone who played for Yomiuri Giants and NYY may not want to play anywhere else.

Yes...
because Sabean's dumb enough to move a 22 year old ace type pitcher who throws 95-100, with a good change and killer hammer for a 33 year old OF with bad knees, 13 million dollar contract and a prospect who's WHIP, K/9 have all declined through the years.

... well it is Sabean so I guess asking wouldn't hurt.

Given his track record
specifically sending Boof Bonser, Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano for AJ Pierzynski, I would expect him to listen.

True :)
I'd seriously offer him Melky, Matsui, cash, Horne and Marquez and see if he bites for Lincecum.

Timmah is amazing :) and at worst would be a shut down closer.

by randomize on Dec 6, 2007 7:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would offer him as much as
Matsui, Kennedy, Marquez and Betemit for Cain. MAKE THIS HAPPEN CASHMAN. GET CAIN OR LINCECUM.

by malkmusisgod on Dec 6, 2007 7:37 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cain
would be really hard to pry away.

He's younger, less injury prone and has better #s than Timmah.

I mean, I'd take either one. Hard to be picky in this case.

You don't have
to sell Lincecum to me.  I'm the guy promoting a Cano for Lincecum swap around here.

The kid is sick... I got to watch him this summer in Cali.

Matsui + Horne + Marquez + Melky + 10 million in cash.

2 starters, and 2 OF with plenty of cash.

Did the Yanks read my Feinsand inerview?
I told Mark I was down on Matsui. I'd love to get some pitchers other than Lowry for him...

I hope so!
A couple names I have heard floated for him were Brian Wilson and/or Jonathan Sanchez.  They look pretty good.

matsui..
..has been particularly disapointing in the post season. But he's still got a lot of pop in his bat and i bet he's still got a few good years ahead despite the knees. Too bad we can't dump the giambino instead.

Something to think about
Good Morning, Giants fan here.  Thought I'd shed some light on Lowry, Cain and Lincecum.  To those who say Lowry couldn't hang in the AL, you're probably right.  However he didn't pitch that bad against you guys this year.  Jeter 0-2 & BB, ARod 0-2 & BB, Cano 0-2.

June 24 vs. NYY 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
gamelog

Another thing Matsui or Cano isn't going to land Cain or Lincecum.  The Giants are looking for position players who can hit in the middle of the lineup and would be under contract for 3-5 years that are ready to play in 2008.  Preferably right handed batters, being that left handers have a difficult time putting up power numbers in our ballpark.

by Cainer on Dec 7, 2007 3:16 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How does
Cano not fit that description?

He's essentially = Alex Rios but younger.

The Reds, Yankees and Giants are set up perfectly for a 3 way trade.

Lincecum to Yankees.

Matsui + Cash and Joey Votto to Giants

Horne + Lowry + Marquez + White + Miranda (1B Yanks) to Reds.

Reds get a decent haul for Votto.

Giants get two middle of the order bats on the cheap.

Yankees get a power starter.

Cain proposal
I would be willing to trade as much as Matsui, Kennedy, Betemit and Marquez for Cain. Matsui and Betemit would be better than any hitters you have now, Kennedy would be your 3rd starter (with big upside) and Marquez is definitely a good pitching prospect.

by malkmusisgod on Dec 7, 2007 12:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why does anybody mention Cano
when discussing trades?  He's on the verge of being the best 2B, if not infielder, in the AL.  Nobody in their right mind would trade him - it'd be too large a gap to fill.

by docgonzo on Dec 7, 2007 12:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Um, what?!
The Yankees already have the best infielder in baseball. Cano is nowhere near close to being teh best infielder in baseball. Miggy, Pujols, Cabrera, A-Rod....
Fear the Evil Empire

by pfistyunc on Dec 7, 2007 12:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cano is expendable
because he's a 2B.  I'd trade him (for ace pitching) if I thought we could get Orlando Hudson from the D-backs or one of the Jays' 2Bs.

by jscape2000 on Dec 7, 2007 12:56 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

cano is...
..too valuable to the future of the team to trade. No telling which of the vets Matsui, Damon, Abreu, Giambi are going to stay. Those bats need to be replaced eventually. I see him as the team's likely #3 hitter in front of Arod from 2009-1016.

by BobbyNYC on Dec 7, 2007 1:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A little overboard with the best
infielder comment, I'll admit.  But I think he'll flower into a top 2B in the AL.

he is
