$653,400,000 off season?
This is purely speculative at this point. But based on the way things are going, this seems to be how things might fall out. The NYY could spend more or a little less, but this should be in the ballpark.
AROD: $280M/10 + $30M+ in HR boni.
Rivera: $45M/3
Possada: $52.4M/4
Petite: $16M/1
Santana: $150M/6
Rowand: $60M/5
Wang: $4M in arb (not sure about this one)
2 Relievers: $12/3 + $8/2 (guess)
That's $653,400,000. Yikes.
That should give them a $123.5M starting line up, complete with a $13M 4th outfielder.
That will go nicely with their relative bargain of a $56.4M starting rotation and $28M or so bullpen.
Add on another $4M or so for the rest of the bench and you are looking at a payroll of around:
$225,000,000
There's your NYY tradition.

Good point.
I don't have a very good feel for he way either of those guys is going to go now. I think they won't get sorted out until after the Santana and Miggy situations get taken care of.
If either

Absolutely

Huh?
Jones is going to want 3 years minimum at at a five-tool player price. At best, he's a two-tool player (power and defense--although even that has sagged, some).
I think last season

We don't need ...
There is no way I commit to three years with a guy who appears to be on the slippery slope to Dunkin' Donuts.
Your eyes deceive you

Hrm
From a CLE perspective, I wouldn't mind picking him up if NY ate a part of his contract.
What besides bullpen help would you want?
I'd trade Matsui
Matsui has a no-trade, so you'd need to extend him.
That's reasonable
How does this sound:
David Dellucci
AAA outfielder: Shin Shoo Cho
AA pitcher Jim Ed Warden
RP Ed Mujica
He was good in a short ML stint in 2006. Was effective, but unlucky in AAA in 2007 (1.17) WHIP.
Nope
Shin Shoo Cho is interesting if we trade Melky, but I'd think that Gardner would be ahead of him on the depth charts since we'd need a backup center fielder. If the Yanks FO saw him as starting material. What happened to his SLG in 2007?
Warden is nearly 30 years old. Not even close.
I'd give Mujica a second look. He seems to have gotten through the minors by pounding the zone (82 walks in 330IP against 285K). And since switching to the pen he's allowed fewer hits than IP at each level (except MLB).
So here's my counter proposal:
Mujica- he goes right into the competition for a spot in the MLB pen.
Tony Sipp- LHP spent the year at AA (44H+21BB/60IP. He got a fastball (91-94)slider/change combo that Baseball America says makes him a potential closer if his command improves.
Josh Rodriguez- I've seen him listed at SS, 2B, and 3B. The slugger played 133 games in A+ where he put up a .262.351/.460 line. He's got a strong arm with elbow issues. 3B seems to make the most sense if he stays in the Indians system, since Cabrera and Peralta figure to block his progress in the middle infield.
Those three for Matsui and $10 mil over 2 years. You can give that up without subtracting from the 2008 Indians.
What say you?
Interesting counter proposal.
- Mujica is still in the deal.
- You can have Josh Rodriguez.
- I'd prefer you to take Dellucci in the deal. We will not need another vet OF with the acquisition of Matsui. I'd be willing to get take 2M off of the 10M cash you offered.
- Tony Sipp has a real chance to contribute to the Tribe in late 2008. We can't afford to inculde 2 potential 2008 bullpen depth pieces.
Your turn.
Interesting
Pedromo was better at 23 in A.
I'd take Santos.
I'd take Dellucci off your hands, but he was horrible last season (.230/.296/.382) at age 33.
If we take him and downgrade to Sipp, no cash involved.
So you get to choose:
- Sipp, Mujica, Rodriguez and 10 million/ 2 years.
or - Mujica, Santos, Rodriguez, Dellucci and no cash.
OK for get Dellucci then
How does this sound?
* Mujica, Santos and Rodiguez for Matsui and 10M/2.
It's not that harsh
I also know what the papers will say if I let the Indians (who beat us in the playoffs) turn Dellucci into Matsui for $4M and a couple prospects.
How about if I switch it up on you, in light of the Yanks' resent deal with the Nats:
- Sipp, Santos and Rodriguez for Matsui and $10M/2
No can do.
So I think it comes down to:
* Pick 3 from: Shin Shoo Choo, Santos, Mujica and Rodriguez.
With the depth Matsui gives us
With the addition of Jonny A., we don't really need another righty in the pen, and shipping out Matsui and cash for just prospects won't fly either.
Maybe this is why so little happens at the Winter Meetings...
Hrn...
OK so if you don't need another righty in the pen, how about a LH SP? Cliff Lee is available if you have any interest. Ben Francisco could probably be had too.
But if not those 2, this is probably going nowhere.
Going nowhere
Oh well, on to the Giants rumors!
I just did

Didn't we
Matsui isn't likely to be moved because he was injured. He needs to show teams that he's healthy before we'd get anything close to respectable for him.
We did have Delucci
We traded Sheffield coming off the wrist issue, where he had played 39 games that year, so it's a possibility that Matsui could be moved.

Mike Cameron?
He does have a 25 game suspension to serve, but bat him 9th and let him catch everything that doesn't go over the fence in center. Give Damon a few starts a week in center so Giambi can DH more.
Not ideal, but not terrible either.
agreed with..

Re: "There's your NYY tradition"
Pot. Kettle. Black.
I agree.
But if things go down the way that I laid out above, lil' Stein will have shown that no one out NYY's the NYYs.
I think NY fans should just embrace it and not try talk up things like tradition. In the eyes of the rest of baseball the NYY are the hometown hero buying villians. Just embrace it.
You've got to be kidding me
What sports team founded before 1980 doesn't talk about their tradition and their history?
The Yankees have a great tradition of running their business better than any other team. Up until the mid 60s the Yankees had a great farm system along with their payroll.
Take a look at footage of Yankee Stadium in 1996- there were seats to be had. The front office has done a great job making Yankee Stadium a destination. That's part of a great organization- which we've traditionally had.
and
Sorry, it's that whole Boogie Down attitude that tends to go along with our "tradition."
:)
I'll stop referring to our traditions
and why
I've experienced all of that. And I will never stop talking about it. EVER. It's part of being a MFY fan and it's our RIGHT to talk about it. No one else has it. It's OURS.
