Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jake Peavy for Hughes, Melky?

At mlbtraderumors he says Buster Olney states that theres "talk" of Jake Peavy for Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera at the GM meetings.

this is obviously just a rumor but what do you think?

Peavys gonna be an exepensive signing in 2 years, and i doubt the pads would fork up the money so there open to hear talks

i love hughes and value melky really hight but i think youd have to make this trade

Wait
When someone uses the "shits the bed in big games" argument with Arod, you and a lot of folks get all worked up about it.  Every time I make a statement like that I get 15 posts from Econolodge.

I don't think I would do the above trade either, but that's a lame reason why not. Especially considering Peavy's minute "big game" sample size.

Albeit a different sport...
Peyton Manning was often ridiculed because he "shits the bed in big games."

All it takes is one great postseason to change a player's reputation.

Understood
Although A-Rod has had postseason success before, I see your point. I don't know what it is with Peavy, but it is just a gut feeling I have.

No can do
Peavy is a stud, but he's also had some fragility. He's also pitching in San Diego--anyone remember another stud from SD we landed who sucked--Eddie Lee Whitson.

Also, NL pitchers don't necessarily translate well to the AL. I haven't done a ton of research on this, but I think AL pitchers making the league switch have been more successful. (If someone wants to waste some company time and prove me wrong, go for it).

Personally, I'd wait until he's a FA and make a run.

Peavy may never reach free agency
He may just sign an extension with the Padres or whoever receives him in a trade. You have to keep that in mind if you want him.

by Willton on Nov 8, 2007 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

That's just it ...
He's a NL stud.
I'm not sure I'd want him on my AL staff--especially considering his fragility.

I firmly believe in the NL to AL thing
But, Peavy is a stud.  I think K/BB and GB/FB translates well from league to league and it's not like we're trying to acquire an aging vet (see: Randy Johnson).  I wouldn't be worried about him translating over, but his ERA might become more human.

Halfway there
K/BB is precisely what doesn't translate.

You can pitch much more aggressively to the 7-8-9 hitters in the NL.  A pitcher never walks those guys and often strikes a couple of them out.

I might look towards the GB/FB rates, as well the pitcher's linedrive percentage.

I'll keep Googling for it, a couple years ago someone used the three year stats of all the pitchers who switched leagues and calculated the average adjustment.

K/BB
I'm not saying that the ratio will remain the same, but that a pitcher with a better K/BB and GB/FB will more likely succeed going NL to AL than a guy who has poor numbers in those areas.

I'd say he would throw 200IP, 1.18WHIP, 2.75K/BB, 3.20ERA.  Sign me up!

Exceptions
Always have them ... I don't think Peavy would have the results of the two you mentioned.

Especially those two
Schilling had dominated the NL for several years. WHIPS of 1.08, .097, and 1.05. His first year in Boston was the only year he approached that (1.06). Since then he's been merely good (1.53, 1.22, 1.25).

Beckett never dominated the NL the way he was supposed to, and it required the recreation of his mechanics to reach his potential. Once he's repeated his success (1.14 WHIP) for a few season and overcomes his herpes "blister problem," then he'll have been a success.

MLB Trade Rumors sucks anyway
Very few of that site's thoughts ever become substantiated in the papers. The sources that they cite are the voices in the authors' heads.
