Game #4 of the Division Series -- Cleveland Indians at New York Yankees

Cleveland Indians

Grady Sizemore,  CF
Asdrubal Cabrera,  2B
Travis Hafner,  DH
Victor Martinez,  1B
Jhonny Peralta,  SS
Kenny Lofton,  LF
Franklin Gutiérrez,  RF
Casey Blake,  3B
Kelly Shoppach,  C

Paul Byrd,  RHP  (15-8,  4.59 in 2007)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Alex Rodriguez,  3B
Jorge Posada,  C
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Robinson Cano,  2B
Melky Cabrera,  CF
Doug Mientkiewicz,  1B

Chien-Ming Wang,  RHP  (0-1,  15.43 in ALDS)

Pete Abraham reports that Joba Chamberlain will indeed be available for one inning tonight and Mo for two.  He also adds that Ian Kennedy was not physically ready to be added to the postseason roster but could be ready for the ALCS if the team advances to the next round.

Wang's numbers at home and away are well-documented (Hm:  2.75  Rd: 4.91) and has pitched on three days' rest just once during his career in a relief appearance against the Red Sox.

Also well-documented is the lack of success Byrd has against the Yanks during his career (1-4, 4.44 in 8 starts) and was shelled on 8/11 (2 IP, 7 ER) at the Jake.   Byrd's start is a bit of a double-whammy that favors the Yanks because it also takes Ryan Garko out of the lineup in favor of Kelly Shoppach, who is Byrd's personal catcher.

Yankees career numbers against Byrd can be viewed here.  Tribe career numbers against Wang (not including Game 1) can be viewed here.

The featured graphic for tonight's game is the current road jersey logo for the Cleveland Indians.

Just win, baby!

A #4 pitcher who merits his own personal catcher?  Who does Byrd think he is, Mike Mussina?

Let's hope so
The Mike Mussina that got shelled for 3 straight starts in August.

Cleveland will pay...
...for not starting Sabathia.  That has the smell of one of those too clever by half managing decisions.  I mean, have these guys been watching the Yanks since the all star break?  If NYY has a motto this year it's "Pitchers?!  We don't NEED no stinkin' pitchers!" This is the playoffs.  You win TODAY, not: "oh, well if we go to game five we put in the good pitcher, otherwise we win and play the Sox with the good pitcher and...."

I think Cleveland better hide their mothers because the MFY have proved one thing this year - they can beat anybody on a good day, pitching problems or no.  See you guys at the ALCS.

We have big advantages tonight.  We've already won this game on paper.  We just need to execute.

Good luck guys and gal.

How is Martinez at 1st?  Is he a defensive liability compared to Garko?

Wang not getting the ball down
FYI...the team that has scored first in the series have lost all three games thus far.

by anaconda on Oct 8, 2007 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

Freak stats
That goes right with the one about NY only winning when they lose the first game of the series.  Somehow I still think they'd prefer to score first.

by SP on Oct 8, 2007 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Presumably...
... that's largely because the home team has won all three games this series, and therefore had the second chance to score in each inning?

by Jack Roy on Oct 8, 2007 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Clarifying
The Yankees struck first in Game 1 and the Indians tonight---before the home team even had their first at-bat.  Game 2 wasn't in the same mold, but the Yankees scored first after having more chances to score---not something you would be particularly surprised by.

A team like the Yankees should be able to score more than 1 run off of even a good pitcher like Carmona. Blaming Joba for the Yankees loss is ridiculous; you can't expect Joba to be perfect every outing, especially with Torre leaning on him every friggin night. You're out of your mind.

by Willton on Oct 8, 2007 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Perspective, if I may
We had a far better season than we ever could have expected the way our pitching was set up at the beginning of this year.

That said, it's time for Joe to go. I love the guy, I've defended him all year, and I still think this season was the best managerial performance of his career, but the Yankees are primed to start a new era, one led by Joba and Hughes and Kennedy and Cano and Cabrera, and with that should come a new, young manager. Here's to the dynasty Donnie Baseball never got to enjoy as a player. We'll get 'em in '08.

Now let's hope the Tribe can humiliate the Sawx even worse than they baffled us.

It sucks
that we had to rely so much on Moose, Rocket, Viz and Farnsy this year, but what were the alternatives? Hold on to Randy Johnson? Stake our  season on Chase Wright and Tyler Clippard? Lose our star-of-the-future center fielder in order to pick up Eric Gagne?

With the previous generation of pitching washed up and the next generation just a hair short of being ready for prime time, by all rights this should have been a rebuilding year. That we made a playoff run at all was pretty extraordinary.

BTW, A-Rod wasn't great this series, but he didn't totally suck. I say we keep him around.
