Yanks Vs. Indians: Game 80 - Open Thread

Chien-Ming Wang 8-3, 4.01 v. Jeremy Sowers 0-1, 7.20

Starting Lineups

  • J. Damon, CF
  • D. Jeter, SS
  • J. Giambi, DH
  • A. Rodriguez, 3B
  • B. Williams, RF
  • A. Phillips, 1B
  • M. Cabrera, LF
  • K. Stinnett, C
  • N. Green, 2B
  • G. Sizemore, CF
  • R. Belliard, 2B
  • J. Peralta, SS
  • T. Hafner, DH
  • V. Martinez, C
  • B. Broussard, 1B
  • A. Boone, 3B
  • T. Hollandsworth, LF
  • F. Gutierrez, RF

Oh goody. A brand new pitcher with a big, giant ERA. With the first pitch, Jeremy Sowers will be throwing only his sixth inning in his major league career. The Indians have only Kansas City cushioning them from the AL Central basement. Hopefully A - Rod can continue his big hitting ways, and the Yanks can make up some ground on the white-hot Red Sox going into the All-Star break.

What
that was a push off. he was out. bad call

Come on...
Wang. Our outfield looks sluggish today. Very slow catching up to ground balls; thus runs have been produced. Step it up.

Wang
Wang is really struggling -- leaving pitches up in the zone, missing his location.  we're going to have to score a bunch of runs for him tonight, i'm afraid.

Yeah
Half of his pitches are off by A LOT. Stinett is at least catching most of them luckily or the score would be like yesterday's game but the opposite. However, we need Wang to pitch until the 7th. In addition, our bottom half needs to start hitting. You can't just leave it up to Giambi.

Man...
I'm really suprised Mussina and Giambi weren't picked for the all star team. Moose was definitely better than half the pitchers chosen. And Giambi...shall I say more lol.

Good News Though
Devil Rays are winning right now so this is really a must win. We need to gain ground VERY soon.

TB
sheez, the Tampa Bay pitcher has a 1-hitter going thru 7.  i wonder if they're interested in trading him? :)

LOL
If I were Tampa Bay I wouldn't. They haven't had an effective pitcher in years and if they want to get to the playoffs anytime soon, they have something to build upon. On the other hand, they have been known to give away their pitchers so we'll see. Great addition to the Yanks but we'd have to give someone away and at this moment it's not a reasonable option cause they only have one "good" player and that's Kazmir. There isn't really anyone else the Yankees would take or want from the Rays.

Kazmir
just struck out Papi to end the 8th.  this guy is impressive.

that was ugly
once again we make a rookie pitcher look like a future HOFer.  sheez, i don't understand that.

Question
Did Kazmir come out of the Devil Rays' farm system or did they acquire him from a trade?

by YANKtheTitle on Jul 3, 2006 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Kazmir
looks like he started out with the Mets, and then got traded to TB:

Oh ok
thanks. Forgot about that trade.

by YANKtheTitle on Jul 3, 2006 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

This is
embarrassing. One day you score 16 runs and the next you can't even score 3. They need to be more consistent. I rather they score 5-6 runs a game and never have an output like yesterday's game then have 1 game produce ample runs and the next bearly score any. You really see the effect of matsui and sheff now. On the side note, I think i saw matsui throwing yesterday, which a something I've longed to see happen and I hope he's back soon. Pavano-no comment.

Matsui
yeah, but you didn't see him catching the ball -- he still can't do that at all.  i'm afraid he's pretty much done for the season.  even if he can come back in September, it will be like starting Spring training for him.

Yeah
I just saw a glimpse of him. I figured he was catching the ball. You are right about the reutrn of him. I don't think he'll be able to get those clutch hits we need. With that said, I hope Cashman utilizes his mind rather than anything else when deciding whether to make a trade or not.

OMG
I hate umpires. Sigh...another loss in another crucial point.

you win some, you lose some
the good news is that Boston got beat and Toronto is well on the way to losing -- so it's basically a push.  some nights things just don't go your way, and that's what happened tonight.  Wang had a bad night, Cleveland played some excellent defense, plus they got a number of seeing-eye hits.  what ya' gonna do?

this makes tomorrow's game a bit more important though -- we really, really need Chacon to get back on track.  he was pitching so well up until he got hurt -- but hasn't been able to do anything since he came back.  hopefully he'll get his act together tomorrow!

Anyway
We'll be back tomorrow. Enjoy 4th of July. I hope we can top off the fireworks with a win.

Outfield defense

That was the difference in this one. Melky is regressing and Bernie is just a joke. If we had Their OFers running down balls for us it is a different game.

By no means am I throwing in the towel on the season but I can understand if Cashman does not nake a deal and rides it out with what we have.

Ugh this lineup with Cano and Posada out is just dreck. Bernie hitting 5th? Stinett hitting somewhere other than 9th?

I am upset we let Durazo go, we could use the offense.

Regards the Devil Rays....
Kazmir would be a nice addition - good stuff and good makeup. He's on a small team but pitches big against the tougher teams and in larger crowds.

Also - (speaking of the DRays) - Carl Crawford is no slouch. I'd give up a Melky & Bubba & and more than a few packs of bubble gum to get the bulk of his career in the Yankee outfield :)

My thoughts exactly
Sure, we've got problems to solve, but the players had a late game Sunday night, plus a rain delay, plus a flight to Cleveland, etc. Understandable that they'd be a little flat.

good point
i hadn't thought about that, but that certainly does explain a lot.

looking to the future.....
meanwhile, down on the farm in Trenton, Hughes and Cox continue to put up great numbers:

please Mr. Cashman, hands off those two!

that pitch count thing
yeah, it's a pitch count thing, which i never do understand.  only thing i can figure is that they've got some type of master plan for him that has him in AAA at some point in the future, but it's not anytime soon so they're just keeping him at idle speed for now.  or maybe they really are looking at him as trade material, and not wanting to risk an injury?  sure hope it's not that.

I think based on what Dusty Baker
did to Mark Prior, they are just being overly cautious...
