Great Win

Who would have thought that the Yanks could have a streak of at least 10 hits in twelve consecutive games with all these injuries? I think the Cashman effect is taking hold. We have young talent, let them tough it out. Keep Tampa away from him. Go after someone if it looks like we really need to. Pitching is the key. That's where the Yanks need to focus on.

You could see that Phillips had talent when he first came up. Now he's got the chance and making the most of it. Mike Francesca always dumps on Melky, but the kid is 21. His power will improve as any baseball fan knows.

That was indeed a great win
Just more evidence that young fresh talent is important to both the team and fans. When the year started out, I was bummed to see that it was going to be yet another year of rooting for predictable superstars. I mean I love them all--well, not Sheff, but come on. Where's the spontanaity? The excitement of the expected? I know I'm not the only fan who thinks that the injuries (excepting Mariano of course) have been to everyone's benefit.

And wow, I can't believe Melky is only 21. Now Mussina's quote (see my signature) about his run for home last night makes even more sense! And btw, the second part of that quote is: "That's why we play these games, to see something new every day."

p.s. Armando tipped me off to your blog. This is my first post. God help me posting on yet another blog!

Glad to have you but
I can't agree that "the injuries have been to everyone's benefit." If you're saying that it's nice to give the kids a chance to play and thrive, fine. But we don't need anybody on the DL, whether you like Sheffield or not.

It'd be intesting to here
how anxious the players, especialloy Jeter, are to get Sheff back.

What I really like
is not only are the kids getting to play beside greats like Jeter. They're also getting to play together in the bigs after playing together in the minors. Last night there was a great shot of Melky and Cano in the dugout and Michael Kay was saying how Cano, who's been a big leaguer for all of one year, showing the Melk Man the ropes. They live together and work out together, and seem to have a cool friendship.

I hate to see Matsui hurt, too
He's a great great player and a total mensch. I'm not talking about Jeter cause he's not injured-injured, he's just sort of hurt. Still and all, it's nice to see the Yankees be 8 for the last 10 and be able to say to all the haters, flat out, fuck you. There's more to the Yankees than sky-high salaries. And for me as a fan, it's fun to see a break-out star, and I think talented newbies are able to add a certain energy to the team that superstars can't.

do you post on Kos?
Your name seems familiar, and you dropped Armando's name

Yup
I'm from the Land of Kos. That's when I first ran into Armando. I've actually met him in real life too at a Kossak meetup. In fact, lol, he included me as one of the reasons one should choose to be a Yankee fan, a list that was posted on this site a while back.

You're a Kossak too, right?

Welcome!!!
JaneKnowles, welcome to Pinstripe Alley.

You're right.  The Yanks have a long history of big name stars, and an even bigger history of lesser known players that have been considered nobodies but would play together to make a deadly combination against any opponent.

I think back to the names that played with Ruth and Goehrig, that played with DiMaggio, that were the backbone for Mantle, and that have come and gone since the 60's.  Let's face it, the only real period in the team's long and storied history in which the Yanks weren't considered a powerhouse was the 70's-80's, and nobody wanted to face them then.

Thanks for the welcome, Ed
So how much were they charging for beer back when Ruth was playing?

; )

Before my time
But I did get to see my share of Mantle, Maris, Berra, et al.  But even then I was too young to buy a beer.

What about '65 through the early 70s?

GrandEd, if like me you're old enough to remember Mantle, you surely must recall the sorry pre-Steinbrenner Mike Burke/CBS teams of the late 60s and early 70s.  Compared to those teams, the later teams WERE powerhouses.

Proctor
Just read today's item in the NY Times that he pulled a Kevin Brown. Couldn't believe it. The guy punched his PITCHING hand into the clubhouse wall after Saturday's game in Baltimore. X-rays were negative and he apologized, but come on! He obviously needs more time with the team shrink.
