they did show Torre and Cashman talking right after Stinnett went in, and they were both smiling and laughing -- so apparently it's not anything serious. or maybe that was all they could do to keep from crying.

Overstatement of the Century

Wow, that is incredible. This guy has been on fire this year, but it is only 40 games into the season. Other than this 40 game stretch, he has been a rather pedestrian reliever, now we are tabbing him as the successor to the greatest reliever in history. Absolutely absurd.

Pitching

I know our lineup has been decimated by injuries, but I am really concerned about the pitching. Moose and Wang look pretty good, but Chacon looks like Cinderella at 11:59PM every time he pitches, Wright is a huge question mark on his best day, and Big Unit is an absolute joke. We MAY be able to slug our way into the playoffs again this year, but there is no hope of actually winning anything. Right now, we don't come close to matching the rotations of Chicago and Boston, among others.

No need to rush him

He is just a high school pitcher, so they have to build up his innings slowly. If you don't, you create Kerry Wood or AJ Burnett. Those guys were killed by their clubs as youngsters and look at them now. There is no need to harm the club long term in a panic move that may or may not help the current old, seriously flawed roster. With our pitching woes, it isn't like Hughes alone is going to fix anything.

Don't blame that one on injuries

Mo and Unit are supposedly healthy and it was their fault we lost the game. Even with a depleted lineup, we still scored six runs. That should be plenty enough support when your highest paid pitcher starts the game and you bring in Mo in the 9th. The bats were hardly to blame for that train wreck.

This is an aging, fragile, unathletic lineup. There is nothing to do to fix it because their salaries have all but eliminated any roster flexibility. The only hope is to sign Clemens. Other than that, they need to blow up the roster and start over where they can. The position players are pretty much set in stone, but the roster needs to be completely revamped next year.

Don't Blame the Aging Lineup for This

They did just fine.

I blame Rivera a little bit, but most of the blame has to be on RJ, who layed another turd on the field tonight. He either has to adjust or hang it up.

And Rivera's reign may be over, but wait awhile. It usually takes him till later in the season to really cook. And for whatever reason, he always seems to blow it in ties. He seems better in save situations.

I thought the Mets' reaction was a little over the top. I mean, they beat the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th, but they celebrated like they clinched a pennant or something.

I wish the game was at the stadium so RJ could have been booed off the field properly.

It wasn't the lineup's fault tonight. My point was that there really isn't too much that can be done to fix this team without seriously hurting the team's future. They are not one or two players away. They are at least three starters and a few bullpen arms away at this point. I was out tonight trying not to spend every night in front of the TV watching the game. But I did see the final score. If we give up this series it's a very bad sign. Is anyone up for the 80's again?

Rivera

i really can't blame Johnson. he's clearly the #5 pitcher, and that's about what you would expect from your #5. sheez, we give him a four run lead in the top of the first, and he immediately walks the leadoff hitter in the bottom half. that's inexcusable even in Pony League. this guy's career is over.

but i'm afraid it is time to start worrying about Rivera. don't look now, but we're in to the second quarter of the season. and so far in May he's had 9 appearances, and only 3 of those are what i would call up to his standards. eventually we'll get beyond this rash of injuries with the position players, and somehow we'll solidify the #3 and #4 positions in the starting rotation. but what good will that do us if we don't have a reliable closer? it will all be for naught. and you know that Torre will stick with Rivera through hell and high water.

amazing as it sounds, right now i'm more concerned about the closer position than anything else on this team.

This is depressing

It seems that we can't catch a break, unless you count the countless bone fractures on this team. Physically, everyone seems to be falling apart. And nothing could be more of a physcological blow than seeing Mo struggle. Through thick and through thin, Mo is supposed to be someone we can depend upon, in regards to our staff, the one thing constant among a sea of question marks. Perhaps this panic is premature. I sincerely hope that Mo proves us wrong.

His career is over? I admit he's been around a long time, but it's a little early to pronounce Mo finished.

Johnson is not supposed to be #5. We know he's not the ace, but he doesn't seem to understand that he can't blow people away anymore.

You can and you will blame Johnson for surrendering a the lead 3 times after being spotted 4 in the top of the first.

i had wondered why Rivera was even in there, but then with Torre, hell you never know what to expect -- but now i read that Farnsworth came out because he had lower back pains. and Bernie apparently is out for tomorrow as well. what a disaster this is turning in to.

Conspiracy theory

Okay, I officially put forth my conspiracy theory to explain all these mysterious injuries: Damon is working undercover for the Red Sox. He's been systematically slipping some anti-steroid into the sunflower seeds (or bubble gum in some cases) of every Yankee - a substance that causes the body to break down but can't be picked up in a urine sample. He fractured his own foot to make it look like he's innocent. He gets a bonus from the Sox for each Yankee who winds up on the DL and an even bigger bonus if he takes down Jeter. I'm planning to make a citizen's arrest and expose what he's been up to.
