what about cano

i've been very happy and excited with the play of robinson cano so far this year and expect big things from him now and in the future. I'm interested in what all you yanks out their think about cano and what type of player, defensively and offensively he will mature into in the future. So far his offense has been very impressive, but his fielding could use improving, however he's a gold glover compared to Soriano. I'm happy we got rid of soriano although i felt differently at the time. I believe cano is a much better fit for the yanks and its nice to see a player unable to hold back a smile after he gets a hit. cano has been a breath of fresh air.

He's the future of this team
Cano will eventually be an all star, he's working out the kinks in his defense...and his hitting improves every day.  I think we'll see more power in the future too.

It almost is crazy that he bats 8th or 9th, where he would be hitting #2 on most teams...but there are too many veteran all stars in teh top of the lineup especially now with Damon leading off and Jeter hitting 2nd...

This is a guy that the Yankees should keep around, he doesn't have the cockiness of Soriano and is a much better fielder (less power, at least right now).

The Yanks need fresh young players....so hopefully we'll see him in 10 years being a leader on a future Yankee team.

Go Yankees.

Bottom of the Order
If anything is going to help his plate discipline, it's batting at the bottom of the order.  I realize the strategical implications of batting Cano and Damon back-to-back, but no pitcher in their right mind wants to pitch around Cano to face the top of the Yanks uber-scary order.

So he'll see plenty of hittable pitches.  But because he'll see so many of them, he'll be able to take pitches more easily, since he knows he'll see good ones eventually.  This may not directly lead to him drawing a ton of walks, but it will hone his eye .

Don't Know
I'd say his upside is something like .310/.365/.500, which would be pretty spectacular for a second basemen. More likely, my guess is his average year will be something like .290/.335/.460 with a couple of years more like the above, which would still be good as long as he plays decent defense at second. My worry is that he'll continue to fill out and will have to be moved to 1st or an outfield corner, where his bat wouldn't be enough for the position. I think we'll know more when this year is over, as last year seemed to be a real jump in prodcution, and we have to see if he can keep this up for another season.

Bowa
I really like the fact that he worked hard with Larry Bowa in spring training. Shows me he wants to improve and I think we're seeing the results so far. Seems more focused than last year but you gotta love that big smile after he gets a hit.

I dont think it will be a problem
nycfan I dont believe his size will begin to be a problem at any point. He is not big by any means, he added muscle in the offseason because he thought it would make him more able to handle a full season. I also read that now he goes to the gym with A-Rod after each game to work out for 30 minutes. The guy has great work ethic and I think his only problem is a little mild ADD. He needs to keep his head in the game more on defense and he will be great for us. his pitch selection is what has really been impressive to me so far, he has 4 strikeouts so far, which is the lowest out of any Yankee regular. His pitches per plate appearance has increase by .2. We are lucky to have Cano hitting 9th for us, on many teams he would be hitting much higher.

I would expect his future to be somewher along the lines of .310/.350/.475 with 15 HR and 40 2B which looks a little like Jose Vidro

Carl Pavano is a bum

I miss soriano
Yeah, I know about his defense, but he was my favorite young player in a long time. I miss Nick Johnson, too. But that's why I don;t get to make the decisions on trades.

I'd like to see Cano stop choking on the field in pressure situations. If he boots another ground ball in the 9th, I'm going to tear my hair out. Otherwise, it's hard not to like the guy.

soriano who
beckett- soriano made the same mistakes in the field and also had a problem staying focused in the field. Soriano also swung at pitches that he had no business swinging at and was to selfish by focusing to much on his stats. Cano compliments the yanks far better that soriano ever did. He's so young and will have all the time in the world to become a better defensive 2B.
