Cashman Tells Sheff Yanks Will Likely Pick Up 2007 Option

In a good move, at least in my eyes, Cashman pulled Sheff aside today and told him not to worry about the Yanks passing on his $13 Million option for next year.

See yankees.com for the article.

Sheffield may be getting older, and a little crankier, but he is still one of the most dangerous hitters I have ever seen.  He plays harder than most rookies do.  Lets face it, he is extremely valuable to the Yankees.  He has had some injuries and pain that have affected his fielding a bit, but this is not a guy you want to let go.  I'm happy about what Cashman did today.

I know some of you would want Sheff gone for a younger player.  But, at least give him this year and next year...he has earned it, and unless injuries keep him from performing you guys won't be sorry about this move.

I'm ok with telling him that
Cause they haven't gone and picked up the option yet.  So long as his numbers don't continue their free fall of the last couple of seasons, go ahead and pick up the option.  Especially if it looks like Bernie will retire, and Shef could become the full time DH.
Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio.

I Agree
That way the Yanks can still pursue another outfielder later on (probably next season) and still keep Sheff's bat.

The DH could really help Sheff in his later years.

Go Yankees.

Shufflin' Shef
Bernie is a one-year deal, right? If that's the case, and Sheff puts up big numbers again, we could simply slide him to DH and keep our eyes peeled for a young stud.

We have several in the minors who are (19-20) so they might still be a couple of years out, but I think it's a great idea.

But a happy Sheff
may not be a hitting Sheff. He usually needs some grievance, somebody to be mad at, to play his best. Hopefully something will happen that gets him fired up!
