Texas wants answer on Zito soon

Star Telegram

The Rangers have let Barry Zito's agent, Scott Boras, know that they don't plan to wait around all winter for his response. The Rangers want to hear by this weekend whether or not Zito plans to accept their contract offer. Rangers owner Tom Hicks wrote via e-mail: "We've made a very strong offer. If we don't have agreement with his agent by this weekend, we will pursue other alternatives."

Texas shouldn't let Boras dictate the course of the negotiations.

More tactfully put
so the Rangers are willing to tell their fans "Boras wouldn't meet our artificial deadline, so we broke off negotiations."
Great PR.
Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio.

Yup,
that is the reason they are doing it.  So they look like they put an effort for their fans.

Boras
Boras is obviously waiting to see what the Yankees will offer.  Once news of the RJ thing broke, it put the pinstripes into play.  With Steinbrenner being nothing more than a glorified vegetable sitting in a Tampa Bay office, Cashman has been allowed to do his thing without interference.  So far, I like what he has been able to accomplish this winter.  Let's see what else he has in store for us.

Zito to Giants
So I guess you would have to assume that the Unit trade is dead unless the Yanks get confirmation that Clemens will join them this season. I don't know how you can trade Unit without any real replacement options. (Save the Karstens/Rasner reply please) Then again, Cashman is spending over 9M per season on a shitty lefty reliever, so I wouldn't put anything past him.

There goes that!
Well, I didn't see that one coming!  You're right, unless Clemens is on his way via some backdoor meeting with Cashman, RJ needs to stay now.  God knows we can't count on Pavano...and you're right, Karstens/Rasner/Hughes are still a season or two away.  My only concern is that RJ actually requested this, and if he doesn't get moved now, he'll be a malcontent.  I guess we'll see shortly.

On a funny note, I opened a Christmas gift from my mother and discovered a Yankee Jersey.  Too bad it was Shefs!!  I can just picture her shaking her head trying to figure out why this particular jersey was in the clearance rack!!

Will be a malcontent?
The guy is already an insolent prick, so would the Yanks even notice a difference next year?

True that...
This is true, RJ makes Kevin Brown look like a nice guy!
