Theo, You're No Cashman
So says Mike Lupica in an interesting piece looking at how Theo Epstein has fallen back into line after his brief time away from the Sox-- lacking the power Cashman has with the Yankees:
These are all smart people in Boston and bring a lot to the party. But more than two years after the Red Sox got the last out against the Cardinals in the '04 Series, Epstein only wishes he had the power in Boston that Cashman, who seemed to be in some trouble of his own back in '04, now has with the Yankees.

First time, short time
Schilling was only going to one of two teams that off-season and the Yankees in their biggest mistake of this century choose Javier Vasquez. The Yankees could have had the bloody sock instead we get a Johnny Damon grand slam and the attempted make-up signing of Randy Johnson. The wrong old man from the retirement community of Arizona.
Epstein's two best signings Mueller, and Ortiz even took him by surprise by how well they worked out. One was intended as a defensive pick-up and the other was a lefthanded platoon DH. Granted one won a batting title and the other...enough said.
The point is that I was happy as a clam when the Enron of front offices over there at Fenway brought back the other smartest guy in the room. And now they get JD Drew and Matsuzaka for ungodly amounts of money. Twelve dollar Bud-Lights anyone?
