Igawa Contract almost done

NY Times

...also said that the Yankees were close to completing a five- year, $20 million contract with the Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa. The deal is likely to be completed tomorrow and is pending a physical. The Yankees won the bid to negotiate with Igawa, who has pitched in Japan for eight seasons, on Nov. 28 and have 30 days to negotiate a contract with him.

The Melky deal is definitely in the works since, the Times, the Post and Newsday are all reporting on it. How did The Daily News get shut out of this story? Is anybody excited by Igawa's deal? Anybody?...

Ummm
I mean if we only need him to be our fifth starter than I'll be interested to see what he can give us. I just dont like the fact its a five year deal.

Five years!?
You have got to be kidding me. Another gem from Cashman. What's next, working on an extension for Pavano?

Igawa
I don't have a problem with it. He;s 27. I see him as a lefty in the pen and at $4M per that is reasonable. It is hard to be excited about someone you have never seen play, but I defer to Cashman and Co on it.

More like 9M per
when you add in the posting fee. 9M/year is fucktarded for a lefty reliever not named BJ Ryan.

Not really
The $25M posting comes off this year and is not subject to luxury tax which is huge for us. It is not like the positing fee from 2006 is going to stop us from doing something in 2007 like it might if we actually owed him $9M per. Also, if we want to trade him moving a $4M contract is a lot easier than a $9M one.

I agree
In one sense I can see the benefit of the luxury tax avoidance, but any way you slice it, it costs the Yanks 46M over five years. That is 9.2M per year. Regardless of when they write the checks, etc. that is still 46 million dollars coming out of the Yanks coffers.

Also, I think we can officially get rid of the "if" we have to trade him. Instead, it is just a matter of how much of the 46M we are going to have to eat to get rid of him. Then again, witht the brilliant manner in which Cashman puts together a pitching staff, he may well choose to keep the most expensive lefty specialist in the game.

Melky/Cabrera/LaRoche
As a Pirates I love this.  I think the Yanks are also winning here, Melky is expendible and Gonzalez will certainly contribute.  I don't really see the Braves angle per se, but you have to assume they're very high on Thurman.

edit:
As a Pirates FAN I love this.  Sorry, missed a word.

Fuck no!!
Don't trade Melky!  He is going to be the future outfielder!

by BillyBobisdrunk on Dec 16, 2006 6:32 PM EST reply actions

We have future OFers
Jose Tabata, Carlos Urena , Josue Calzado, Brett Gardner, etc etc etc. We have OFers prospects. Gonzalez is a guy who can dominate in our pen for years to come. A Gonzo-Mo combo would probably be the best 1-2 lights out punch in the game. It also means The F-Word is not counted on every night which is good.

However, if the deal was really Melky to Atlanta, LaRoche to Pit, Gonzalez to NYY I would probably just cut Pittsburgh out and take LaRoche. He is an excellent fielder and could be out first baseman for years to come.

agreed
why not just get laroche for melky?

gonzalez's tendinitis last season seems problematic.

by lbc on Dec 16, 2006 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

ahem
realisitically, Tabata would not be ready until 2010, and at the very very best late 2008. Gardner make Melky look like Barry Bonds, and the other 2 guys havn't even made it out of rookie ball, a good lefty reliever don't grow on trees, but neither does a severicable young OF.

I heard
That the 3 way deal is all but dead. But the Yanks and Pittsburgh are still talking.

Don' t believe those rumors
Schuerholz isn't that dumb. I doubt they ever would have dumped Laroche for as little in return as Melky.
