Open Thread: Game 84-Yanks beat Indians 7-2 (cont.)

Continuing on their torrid pace, the Yanks lopped off another game from Boston's lead and are only 3 1/2 games back of first place.

Mussina pitched a terrific game. He's been throwing his fastball a lot more now and hitting the corners at will. That has been the key, the heater setting up his off-speed pitches.

Giambi, A-Rod and Jeter hit bombs and the rookie Cabrera got his first major league hit.

The downside is Gordon's injury. Nothing has been released so far and his health is imperative to the success of this club...

Melky?
Well, the Yankees are a surprise a minute. Who is this kid and what's the plan here? Is he being showcased as trade bait? Was he brought up from Columbus to replace Womack/Bernie/Bubba? What gives?

No offense against the "kids," but I sure would love to have a real pitcher for Saturday's game.

According to the papers
Melky is the CF for a while, Womack goes to the bench and Bernie is the DH.  They'll experiment with him like they did Cano.  Let's hope he produces like Cano.

MELKY
is the real deal and i have been very excited to see him play for a while now.  in AA ball he was hitting .267, he was recently promoted to AAA ball and hit .324 with 3HR and 11 RBIs in under 2 weeks-- THAT's when the rumours of trade bait were flying.  cashman said he brought him up b/c what's out there is too expensive, he asked around and asked for the boss' permission, got it, and brought him up to solve our CF problems from within.  i don't think he's trade bait, i hope not, simply b/c it's a huge risk for them to showcase a 20 yr old in the bigs.  they could've showcased him in AAA where he was hittin the tar off the ball.  i'm not saying he's gold glove material, but like cano, he has enough talent to seriously hit lotto.  the downside on melky is real, but so is the upside, and the upside is HUGE...

melky cf, bernie dh, womack utility

our pitching staff is a fright.  maybe rj can always pitch on 3 day's rest :)

I like what I have been seeing....
No drama--just score runs, pitch decently and no bonehead plays. They need to finish the 1st half strong. With the O's and Bosox playing each other, the Yanks can either finish in 2nd place or finish 1/2 game out of first, but they need to keep the streak alive. It's possible because they appear to have the Indians number winning 9 of the last 11 games against them. Hopefully Wang can follow up his last great start with another. The Indians throw Cliff Lee at the Yanks. He's pitched decent but poorly against the Yanks.

There! I'm hopeful now. Then again there is reason to hope since we don't face TB or KC again until August.

LOL!  good comment -- heck, if we'd just played .500 ball against those two teams, we'd be tied for first right now!
