Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

It's Official. Dotel Signs.

At one year for 2 million, Octavio Dotel comes dirt cheap. Tommy John surgery will do that for a player. I hope he can get back to the Dotel of 2004, the Dotel who dominated and not the one who choked. Physical success rates from his type of surgery are in the low nineties, but it usually takes more than a season to get back on track.

I think with Rivera as the late inning anchor combined with the run support they'll recieve from the still explosive offense, this newly fomed bullpen (Farnsworth, Myers, Small, Dotel, Rivera, Sturtze, Villone) may congeal into a tough group to score on in the later innings.

Consider
2005 WHIP (Walks+Hits/Innings Pitched):
Bean 1.50
DePaula 1.65
Embree 1.46
Franklin 1.50
Gordon 1.09
Graman 3.75
Groom 1.52
Henn 2.56
Leiter 1.67
Mendoza 2.00
Pavano 1.47
Proctor 1.41
Quantril 1.72
Rivera 0.87
Rodriguez 1.64
Small 1.25
Sturtze 1.32
Wright 1.77

Farnsworth 1.01
Dotel 1.21
Villone 1.43

Now I think these numbers say some interesting things.  The first thing that struck me is that, as bad as Sturtze was last year, he was the best option after Gordon, and until Dotel gets healthy Sturtze looks like the best option to pitch the 7th again.  The second thought I had was that getting rid of Rodriguez and Quantril ought to count as an improvement of the bullpen equal to a major signing.  The third was that Villone was terrible last year, and I hope he looks like he did with the Mariners rather than when he was with the Fish.

Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio.

Dotel
So what are we now? The official team for pitchers with a history of arm problems? We signed Mendoza too. Sheesh.

Johnny Damon?
ABC news is reporting he's reached a 4-year $52 million deal with the Yanks.  Could it be true?

Heeeres Johnny!
Wow. I'm shocked. Not only did I think the Yankees weren't going to sign him, I didn't think (and still don't) believe he'll fit the corporate mold.

I thought for certain the Yankees would pursue Joey Gathright and Corey Patterson (both young, both available) in lieu of a weak-armed, long-haired hippie from beantown.

I am happy it's only a four-year deal. I think he'll definately jump start the offense--at least for his first two years ... After that the Yankees will need to set up double and triple cutoffs on all balls hit to centerfield.

Not thrilled with the signing, but it does seriously chink the Red Sux.
